Authentic Fossil Cluster

Unknown

About the Item

Measures approximately 10 x 8 x 1 inches. Good Condition. This decorative sculpture contains a cluster of fossils embedded into thick black stone. The black and white fossils have a smooth, shiny surface which contrasts nicely with the rough texture of the stone. These fossils are elongated, not in their traditional spiral form, which provides interest to this piece. Fossils were prehistoric crustaceans, related to squid and octopus. Their characteristic spiral bodies are instantly recognizable, and are distinguished in their unfurled version from other fossils by the eight sections that make up their forms. They may have been excellent swimmers and, like squid, may have been able to squirt ink at attackers.

Chicago's most well known work is The Dinner Party, which is permanently installed in the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. Makes a superb gift! Inspired by an original recording conducted by Igor Stravinsky and William Hogarth's series of eight paintings and engravings of the same name, Hockney began designing the set and costumes production of The Rake's Progress. Through his designs and the use of his now iconic cross-hatched etchings, he wanted to create a 20th century response to the opera and to Hogarth's 18th century idea. These cufflinks are based upon those Hockney etchings...
