Yayoi Kusama DOTS OBSESSION: Black Big Dots Skate deck Yellow Conceptual Pop Art

2018

About the Item

Yayoi Kusama - DOTS OBSESSION: BLACK BIG DOTS Date of creation: 2018 Medium: Screen print on Canadian maple wood Edition: Open Size: 80 x 20 cm Condition: In mint conditions, brand new and never displayed Observations: Edited by the MOMA, the original samples of the skates were just details of works created by Kusama. These previous designs were sent to the artist for her approval and turned out she dismissed them all. She then painted on the decks creating a unique work specifically conceived for this peculiar edition. This skate decks are made of Canadian maple wood and are available in four variants: Black Big Dots, Red Big Dots, Black Small Dots and Red Small Dots. Each deck is sent along with its certificate of authenticity and a wall mount is included. Her polka dots have filled rooms in galleries and museums and this need for space and spreading has taken common objects too. This is why we Kusamas' work has outbounded the art lines and we can find her mark in design objects such as sculptures, furniture, homeware or, why not, skateboards. ABOUT THE ARTIST Born in Matsumoto, Japan, in 1929, Yayoi Kusama is the most relevant artist from her country. Her artistic outburst took place during the 60s when she moved to New York and left Tokyo behind, where she had resided to learn about the Nihonga art (traditional Japanese painting) and had her first exhibitions. Once at the Great Apple, she had the chance (or they did) to show her work along other relevant artists of the time such as Andy Warhol or Claes Oldenburg, becoming one of the Pop Art’s pioneers. Without a doubt, this was the most productive time of her life until then and Yayoi Kusama turned into the leader of the avant-garde movement, organizing multiple “happenings” in such visible places like Central Park or Brooklyn Bridge. Kusama reaches her own and recognizable style at this moment, influenced by the hippy scene, psychedelia and feminist movements. Despite of achieving a great international fame during her stay in New York, this wasn’t reflected in her personal economy. Here mental disorders became worse and by the middle 70s she decided to go back to her native Japan. She’s been living there since then at a psychiatric residence she entered on her free will. The 80s and the 90s mark a devoid of creativity in her career that comes back to life by the early 2000s. Today, this octogenarian is still creating works with great energy and has solo shows worldwide, not to mention that her works are permanently exhibited at the most important museums in the globe. Yayoi Kusama is a multi-talented enthusiast artist dedicated to painting and sculpting but also creates major sized installations. She is also well known for her writing and has published plenty of novels and poems. Her recognizable work highlights for her repetitions of simple elements and vivid colours that are a clear reflection of this artist’s personality, marked by psychological disorders she’s been suffering since she was a kid. The use of dots, as elements than can only have a meaning and movement when repeated, are a therapy to Kusama and help her to express and release from her obsessions, fears and insecurities.

  • Andrés Nagel - UNTITLED 4 Etching & Collage Spanish Contemporary Conceptualism
    Located in Madrid, Madrid
Andrés Nagel - UNTITLED 4 Date of creation: 1991 Medium: Etching and collage on paper Edition: 75 Size: 98 x 69 cm Condition: In very good conditions and never framed Observations: Etching and collage on paper signed by the artist and numbered edition of 75. As the result of his own experiences, training and life lived, comes out the art of Andres Nagel. Unclassifiable in a particular style, there are many who tried to tag his work as oneiric or surrealist. Even he has been labelled as a Pop artist, by the use of newspapers on his collages, like it happens on this print. According to Nagel, all these attempts of caging the artists are vane, as "even though art is being sold as if, it is not for mass consumerism". This is, the viewer must let go, think and open his or her mind to what is being seen, and mass culture is just the opposite of that. ABOUT THE ARTIST Andrés Nagel Tejada is a Spanish painter, sculptor and printmaker born in San Sebastian in 1947. Nagel completed his studies in architecture in 1972 in Pamplona. During this time as a student he began to work in engraving techniques. Since then he starts to travel to other European countries and the north of Africa. The Spanish scene at that time was dominated by abstraction and already had international recognition thanks to artists such as Chillida and Tapies, but Andres Nagel, who didn't feel identified with these trends did tune with the artistic movements that found in other countries such as Italy, Switzerland and Germany and soon opted for figurative art. A controversial artist, he rose to prominence with some of his works at the beginning of his career. In the mid 70's Nagel started to show his works in many exhibitions, both collectively and individually. Noteworthy among these events, his participation in the exhibition "New Spanish Painting" on Hastings Gallery in New York that introduced him to the American public. In 1978 also participates in a very important exhibition that pays tribute to the work of Joan Miró in Mallorca. During the 80's the artist works in numerous international exhibitions in cities like Varna, Dortmund, Bonn, Basel or Baghdad. In 1988 the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao exhibits the graphic work of Nagel, in this show a catalogue raisonné is edited. In 1989 he began his collaboration with the gallery Tasende California and participates in many American art fairs. Thereafter Andrés Nagel travels the world and his work is present in several countries including Mexico, Japan, Singapore, China, France, Canada, Germany or Italy. In 2003 Nagel inaugurates in Amorebieta (Vizcaya) a bronze sculpture of eight meters high that he entitles "La patata" (the potato). Unparalleled defender of the intellectual property, the transfer of this work for urban reasons is considered by Nagel as an insult to his work, leading him to sue the city council. In 2009 re-litigated against a porcelain company that, according to the artist, plagiarizes his designs and get benefits from them without his consent. Andrés Nagel's work can be defined within the postmodern figuration...

Andrés Nagel's architectural training is very present in all of his works. The way that this artist synthesizes forms and concepts leaves a statement of his beginnings. Tubes and other industrial materials are very present in many of Nagel's works and build up an essential part of the workshop process of this artist.
