About the Item
Subtle color gradients have recently become a prominent element in Audrey Stone's new works. Observing shifting color and light in nature is an ecstatic experience for her. Simultaneously experiencing excitement and calm, produces a desire to capture this dynamic opposition in her current paintings, Stone uses the boundaries between broad and narrow bands of adjacent colors to generate visual vibrations. Intrigued by the way the eye and brain process these transitions between colors, and how those transitions inform the viewer’s emotional and physical response to the work.
Audrey Stone received her MFA from Hunter College and her BFA from Pratt Institute, both in painting. She also studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and was selected for the Artist in the Marketplace program at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited widely across the United States, as well as in Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, England, France, and Japan.
Recent exhibitions include a 2018 solo exhibit of her paintings at Morgan Lehman Gallery, a two-person show at Muriel Guepin Gallery in 2015, and a solo exhibit of a thread-based installation on Governor’s Island in 2014. She has shown in group exhibitions at the Andy Warhol Museum, the Arkansas Art Center, the Columbus Museum, Geoffrey Young Gallery, Jeff Bailey Gallery, Kentler International Drawing Space, ODETTA Gallery, Schema Projects, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
Her work is in the collections of Fidelity Investments and the Amateras Foundation in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Stone lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Audrey Stone
Audrey Stone is an American abstract artist. Her work explores color, line, materiality and process across multiple mediums and surfaces. She was born in New York City and currently lives and works in Brooklyn. Throughout her career, Stone has worked in multiple mediums, including site-specific installation, painting, drawing, sculpture and mixed media. Her works unfold on an intimate scale. Many of her works also incorporate a sewn element, adding handwoven lines of thread, string or floss to the surface. As images, the works by her confidently express color, pattern and line while as objects, they reveal something far more personal through their presence.

Seeking the Sound of Cobalt Blue is a series of larger paintings on 8 ply museum board and large sheets of rag paper that have been created since the winter of 2016.
Using domestic construction materials from her garage, extras from home improvement projects or the garden, have been captured, much like a photogram, but with paint, not silver. By blending photography and painting, Fagan finds that the patterns created with industrial, mass-produced objects around the house and garage, speak to her interest in producing paintings that link to sound. These works are portraits of the artist’s home, its history, and the materials used to build that maintain her home.
