Amal Bachir is a Moroccan Postwar and Contemporary artist born in 1954. Modernism in painting in the contemporary era has become a pure, self-referential art. In many abstract paintings, the canvas transforms itself to give a pure, indeterminable perceptive in which one cannot distinguish between ‘top’ and ‘bottom’. Amal’s painting operates according to this perspective. It has a distinguished, contemporary inclination toward adopting the principle of equivalence or interchangeability.
Amal’s paintings do not communicate a message or a point of view. Instead, it invites the viewer to partake in a sort of foreclosure or obliteration of significance. That is, to put aside the content (subjects, themes, patterns) to focus on procedures, forms, and stylistic traits as visual possibilities. It is a silent ceremony of total lucidity, where creativity makes color light, and form a festive celebration of the painter’s performance and skill.
“My paintings are inspired by the blessing of a moment or the hospitality of a place,” says Amal. The experience of Amal’s work reveals a muteness that cancels the ordinary whisper of feelings and the elusive reflection of a state of mind. With its assemblage, collage, and sampling, the pictorial work alone constitutes the organizing principle that structures and orders the work’s stylistic unity, revealing shapes (squares, triangles, crescents) and graphics (Tafinagh symbols).
