‘A sense of place develops when we combine memories and experiences with it.’ Contemporary abstract artist Candy James is known for her large scale, textured, nature inspired paintings on canvas using natural earth pigments to depict the Cotswold landscape in abstract form. As an environmental artist she explores psychological narratives surrounding place identity and the interconnectedness of man, nature and art. ‘Walking in the Cotswold countryside, locating interesting natural earth pigments from soil, limestone, streams and rock I capture organic elements of the landscape drawing me closer to nature. The relationship between these activities and my thinking considers my exploration as a creative aesthetic practice. The subsequent process of cataloguing, crushing and refining the pigments to create my own paints is both primal and mesmerising, ancient yet contemporary. There is a complexity to the simple natural elements used in my paintings. Their many layers folding in the past, present and possible futures of our actions and an outcome that is minimalistic and abstract in nature.’

What the night delivers" an original abstract contemporary landscape by Gina Parr and other works from the series "Love or Money", explore the deep emotional connection with land and sea scape that the Artist's father gave to her; taking her with him on his day and night fishing trips when she was a child. Working with the memories and emotions of both joy and saudade for time past and life experience gained, her practice reflects her fundamental need to express this bitter- sweet nature of the human condition through abstracted scape and form. In this work Parr is interested in conveying both the joy and the apprehension of her memory of an overnight trip in the darkness to fish with her father.
Gina Parr is available online and in our gallery at Wychwood Art. Gina works predominantly in the medium of painting, but also photographs when traveling: her way of painting whilst on the move. Her work is driven by autobiographical themes and natural reference, exploring the human condition through connections to place, time, space and memory. She has exhibited widely in galleries and art fairs in the UK and completed commissions in The Middle East, Belguim and London. Her works are held in collections Worldwide including Keble College Oxford, Director of Jestico + Whiles Architects London, President of the Boston's Children's Museum USA, and Goldman Sachs Senior Economist, London.
