About the Item
This signed painting by acclaimed African-American artist David Hammons displays an early experimental use of painted material during the artist’s formative years at Otis Art Institute and Chouinard Art Institute (Now CalArts) in Los Angeles. Intriguingly, in both composition and coloration, this particular work suggests the artist’s subsequent and noted body prints on paper, as referenced in the book "David Hammons: Body Prints, 1968-1979."
According to his longtime dealer, New York’s Mnuchin Gallery, Hammons' work has been collected by The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris; Francois Pinault Fondation, Venice; and the Tate Britain, London.
Gallery owner Robert Mnuchin co-authored the comprehensive monograph, “David Hammons Five Decades.” He is also the father of Steven Mnuchin, the 77th US Secretary of the Treasury.
