About the Item

This striking semi-abstract still life painting titled “Still Life with Masks” was created in 1983 by Denver modernist Edward Marecak (1919–1993). Executed in bold oil on board, the work exemplifies Marecak’s mid-century modern aesthetic, featuring a vibrant palette of pink, orange, red, brown, green, and blue. The composition blends flat, patterned areas with dynamic contrasts, infusing the scene with energy and visual rhythm. Presented in its original vintage frame, the piece measures 48 ¾ x 28 ¾ x 2 ½ inches, with an image size of 48 x 27 inches. From the estate of Edward Marecak, this painting is an excellent example of his signature approach, merging semi-abstract forms with expressive color and design. About the Artist: Edward Marecak, a prolific Denver-based painter and educator, dedicated his life to fostering young artists while creating a diverse body of work spanning paintings, lithographs, monoprints, drawings, ceramics, wood sculptures, jewelry, and stained-glass windows. Born in Brunswick, Ohio, Marecak’s artistic vision was deeply shaped by Eastern European folk tales and the magical stories of his grandmother, inspiring his bold, flat patterns and Byzantine-influenced compositions. Throughout his career, Marecak remained focused on artistic expression rather than commercial success. His works often resemble stained-glass mosaics, combining strong outlines, intricate forms, and striking color contrasts. Today, his paintings are celebrated in major collections, with retrospectives—including the 2007 exhibition at Kirkland Museum—cementing his legacy as one of Colorado’s most distinguished modernists
