This work belongs to the series of mural studies produced by Enrico Sirello in the mid-1970s, a key moment in his investigation of perception and anisotropic optical effects in abstract painting.
The composition is organized around a single horizontal band of repeated black modules, placed along the lower part of the panel and isolated within a large light ground. The repetition is not mechanical: subtle variations of form and spacing create a visual vibration that changes as the viewer’s eye moves across the surface.
For Sirello, painting was not representation but an active perceptual experience. These modular structures emerge from the intersection of geometric abstraction and visual psychology, particularly Gestalt theory. The image functions as a dynamic optical field, guided by rhythm, direction, and pause.
The artist described such works as “night observations”—mental notes and visual studies conceived as preliminary stages for larger mural compositions.
