About the Item

Herbert Siebner (1925-2004) was a German-born Canadian painter whose work is characterized by its expressive use of color and texture, and its exploration of themes of war, exile, and the human condition. Siebner's early life was deeply marked by the rise of Nazism and the horrors of World War II, experiences that profoundly shaped his artistic vision. After the war, he studied at the Berlin Academy and embraced Expressionism, finding a visual language to convey the complexities of human experience.   Siebner immigrated to Canada in 1954, where he continued to evolve his artistic style, incorporating elements of abstraction and symbolism. His work often features recurring figures such as the Mother Goddess and the Giant, archetypal representations of creation, resilience, and the forces that shape our world. Siebner's art invites contemplation on the human journey, the search for meaning, and the delicate balance between chaos and order. His paintings are not merely visual expressions but reflections on life's profound questions, imbued with the wisdom of an artist who witnessed both the darkest depths and the enduring strength of the human spirit.   Siebner was a prolific artist, with over 9,000 works to his name, encompassing paintings, watercolors, drawings, graphics, sculptures, and sgraffito. He held over 100 solo exhibitions in museums and galleries across Europe, Canada, and the United States. His contributions to the art world were widely recognized, culminating in a 2003 retrospective exhibition celebrating 50 years of his artistic journey in Canada.
