About the Item
In this magnificent sensual abstract painting by Andrew Lui, grand gestural brushstrokes create nude human figures who appear to emerge from a riot of colour. In 'The Tall Ladies', titled in French as Les Grande Dames, Lui was inspired by the colour and fluid form of the Impressionists. A master of calligraphic and gestural techniques, he created this painting in acrylic and ink on rice paper, mounted on board. Soft greens, turquoise, yellow, pink, purple and orange are highlighted by jet black ink markings.
“My pigmentation and my material identify me as Chinese. The Chinese are about two thousand years old, and they created a paper that absorbs ink in a very special way and the Chinese brush is also a very sensitive tool. So, I'm using the same materials that our ancestors used." Andrew Lui.
Born in Guangzhou, China (1951-2021) Lui participated in the Chinese Cultural Revolution as a member of the Red Guard but escaped to Hong Kong in 1970. Making his way to Toronto, Lui studied at the Ontario College of Art before traveling to the UK, and Italy. Lui moved from China to Canada in 1972 and lived in Montreal. He studied art in Italy, the UK and Canada from 1972 to 1975. His work is in private and corporate collections in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia.
