About the Item
Playing with the interaction between positive and negative space, strong colors on neutral backgrounds, Canadian artist Virginie Schroeder creates pop art portraits and iconic pop culture imagery that defy traditional pictorial representation. She works from the ground up, adding several layers of thick acrylic paint on canvas until she is able to carve out colorful, undulating portraits filled with emotion as well as recognizable dynamic objects filled with movement. Her work is playful and poetic, constructing the famous visages of notable public figures and familiar popular objects. One step closer and her work is abstract. A step back and an iconic likeness appears.
This large textural original 30-inch tall by 60-inch wide artwork is wired and ready to hang. The sides of the artwork are painted as a continuation of the front and it does not require framing. This artwork is versatile and can be displayed either vertically or horizontally. It is signed by the artist on the front and the back of the painting. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Virginie Schroeder is an innovative artist based in Quebec, Canada. Her paintings are made to inspire new artistic visions while impressing with their stunning technicality. Virginie Schroeder is an innovative artist based in Quebec, Canada. Schroeder puts in play lines, circles and other geometric forms to create works with subjects that are not immediately visible. Verbal and psychological interplay with the public is integral to her creative process. Schroeder’s art is the result of reflection and aesthetic intuition provoked by the geometric forms. Her art exists to intrigue, to elicit questioning of its abstract character visible at first glance. One must focus on a single point and draw away slightly to begin to glimpse the impressively detailed work in its totality. Above all, Schroeder wants things not to be visible immediately. Debra Drexler's paintings are informed both by participating in the contemporary resurgence of abstraction coming out of New York, and by living in the Post Colonial Pacific for close to three decades. In the 21st century, much of our experience is mediated through the screens of our devices. In contrast, the making and viewing of paintings remains a direct, engaging experience in Drexler's paintings. She aims to take us to a state of timelessness that is primal in its humanity, disconnecting us momentarily from the mediated “now” of our electronic devices, and connecting us to a “now” that gives us a glimpse of the infinite. As a colorist, Debra Drexler provokes unexpected color relationships and creates spatial contradictions that come from those interactions. Some of her color choices reference the post digital experience with its highly saturated synthetic color.
