About the Item

Measures Painting 30.25 x 36 inches Framed 37.875 x 44.875 inches Aden Arnold was an American painter whose work often reflected themes of rural life, labor, and social realism, during a time when many artists were focused on depicting everyday struggles and the resilience of ordinary people. During the early-to-mid 20th century, American painters often turned their attention to social realism, documenting the realities of everyday life rather than idealized or abstract scenes. Artists like Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, and John Steuart Curry—who were part of the American Regionalism movement—created paintings that emphasized rural and working-class life, much like what we see here. Arnold’s work aligns with this tradition, therefore this painting depicts a moment of conversation among elders in a rural town, possibly discussing economic hardships, family concerns, or societal changes. Arnold (1901–1973) was an American artist and educator known for his contributions to painting and graphic arts. Born in Jefferson, Iowa, Arnold earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in art from the University of Iowa. He taught Graphic and Plastic Arts at the University of Iowa and later served as a professor at the University of Montana until his death in 1973. Arnold's artistic style was influenced by his studies under Grant Wood, a prominent figure in the American Regionalism movement. This influence is evident in Arnold's focus on rural life and the American experience. His works were exhibited nationally, including at institutions like the Corcoran Gallery and the National Academy of Design. Notable works by Arnold include "Spoiled Child" (1947), an oil-on-board painting measuring 26 x 20 inches, which is part of the collection at the Montana Museum of Art and Culture. Another piece, an untitled oil painting from circa 1922–1929, also resides in the same museum's collection. Arnold's legacy lies in his depiction of the American rural experience and his dedication to art education, influencing future generations through both his creative works and teaching career. This work was exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC in an important exhibition in the 1930s. It retains beautiful hand carved wood frame covered in 23k gold.
