About the Item
Oil on board, undated [around 1934-38], signed lower left, and also signed, titled and inscribed with Artist’s address ‘ADRIAN ALLINSON/87A CLIFTON HILL/NW8/VENETIAN SIESTA on board verso. Dimensions: 61 x 53.5cm (24 x 21 1/16 in). Provenance: Terence Mullaly collection. In the thirties, up to 1938, Adrian Allinson usually spent part of each spring and summer in the Mediterranean area with Heinrich Schroeder, a German painter. Then each winter he often executed paintings at his studio at 87a Clifton Hill, London NW8, from drawings made in situ abroad earlier in the year, situating them at his address in London verso , as is the case with the present one. We can then date this painting to before 1938. The location of this scene is the Rio San Trovaso at Dorsoduro, behind the Accademia. There has been a tavern there for time immemorial, traditional hangout of gondolieri and workmen.
