Albert Ferdinand Duprat
Gondolas on a Venetian Backwater

About the Item

Albert Ferdinand DUPRAT This painting is absolutely beautiful, ideal for lovers of Venice, to make a gift! Our panel is a work that excellently expresses all of his pictorial credo in one of the most typical representations of his repertoire. Panel Size: 18 x 25" (46 x 64cm) Outside Frame Size: 28 x 35" (71 x 89cm) 1882 - 1974 He was born in Venice, Italy and studied at the School of Fine Art there. He specialised in painting urban landscapes and water scenes in a post-impressionist style. His works reveal his love for Italy and, in particular, for Venice. Throughout his career he found an abundance of subject matter and a lot of his painting finds its inspiration from the canals, monuments and splendid views of the lagoon. With great skill, always inspired by French painting from the end of the 19th century, he depicted the fantastic views of the city in a light favourable to his twilight vision. Light was really something Duprat was passionate about, and the chiaroscuro effects of light on water and sky are always very present in his canvases. Duprat also turned to Paris for inspiration and painted many pictures along the banks of the Seine where his extraordinary ability to depict the reflections of light on water, expressed itself in wider panoramas. His style was very pioneering and his use of textured paint to convey ripples on the water quite unique. He features regularly in auctions and his work is represented in museums at Aix-en-Provence, Brest and Laval.

Jules Van Biesbroeck was the son of Jules Evariste van Biesbroeck, a painter of Ghent, but was born in Italy, in Portici, near Naples, while his parents were staying there. (In the 19th century many artists made educational trips to Italy). It was a long visit: the child was two years old by the time the family returned to Ghent.[1] After a short period of practice with his father, van Biesbroeck was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His first painting, "The Shepherd" (French: Le pâtre), was sold at the Triennale in Ghent. In 1888, when he was only 15 years old, he made his debut at the "Salon des Champs-Elysées" in Paris with his monumental work "The Launch of the Argo" (French: Le lancement...
