Alexandra Rozenman
"Blind Date on Brooklyn Bridge", whimsical, theatrical, water, oil painting

2010

About the Item

Alexandra Rozenman’s “Blind Date on a Brooklyn Bridge” is a 34 x 34 x 2 inch oil painting on linen. This piece is from her “Air Fire Water” series. In this body of work the shared theatrical space is an aqueous atmosphere that resembles a pond or flooded earth. It is a precinct of dreams somewhere between liquid memory and the solid remnants of reality at the water’s edge. There is something oddly familiar about the setting. It is the primeval watering hole, Narcissus’s pool of endless reflection, and the looking glass through which we can pass into another dimension. As in all other pieces of Rozenman’s work from this series drawing is a part of the piece. Thin black lines outline strings, stairs, trees and bridges. But why blind date? Why Brooklyn Bridge? Where is it? As in all other works from this series this painting wants the viewer to think, search and decide. The painting is signed, titled and dated on the back and initialed in the front. Sides are painted in multiple colors being participants of the painting in a playful and whimsical way. Alexandra Rozenman immigrated to America from the Soviet Union in 1989. Russian, European and American myths of national destiny and private identity take on a utopian dimension as she absorbs and expresses the psychology of otherness as fundamental aspects of her own identity. She wants her art to be like a well-worn military wool blanket that gives you warmth, love, and history. The artist states. Whatever degree of abstraction defines my thinking and visual self-identification it has all to do with the search for my own image in a great existential sea of sweeping change. Rozenman is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
