About

Genre: Surrealism Subject: Animals Medium: Oil Surface: Canvas Country: France Dimensions: 32" x 25.5" Dimensions w/Frame: 35.25" x 29" Edgar (actually Erhard) Jené (born March 4, 1904 in Saarbrücken - Malstatt , † June 15, 1984 in La Chapelle St. André , France ) was a German-French painter, graphic artist and significant surrealist . 1922-1924 Edgar Jené studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . In 1924/25 he studied at the École nationale des beaux-arts , the Académie Julian and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. There he lived until his return to Saarbrücken in 1928, where he worked until 1935 as a freelance artist. In 1929 he married Charlotte ("Coco") Pfaller, two years later, the son Tom was born. In 1935 he emigrated due to the political development in Germany to Vienna, where he married after divorced their first marriage in 1938 Erica Lillegg . André Breton , Paul Celan , Max Ernst and other representatives of the surrealist movement are among Jené's intellectual companions in Vienna and Paris. Especially with Celan connected him a close friendship. In post-war Vienna (1945-50) he became the promoter and mediator of surrealism; There he organized the first surrealism exhibition together with Paul Celan and Arnulf Neuwirth . Furthermore, he worked in Vienna as an image editor for the magazine "Plan" and as co-editor of the "Surrealistic Publications". With Albert Paris Gütersloh he became the Spiritus Rector of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism . From 1950 to 1965 Jené lived in Paris. There he had close contacts with the Surrealists, who established themselves in the environment of the gallery Furstenberg as a circle of artists. During this time he organized several exhibitions, including in the Saarland. From 1965 until his death he lived in Demeulaine, a medieval mill in La Chapelle St. André (Burgundy). The Viennese journalist and journalist Otto Basil writes about Edgar Jené: "Jené's pictures are surprising because of the immediacy of the purely painterly conception." In his works, a wise moderation and a masterly economical coloring prevail, harmoniously blending in a subdued coloring of midtones. But what gives the pictures such a magical attraction is their unreality, their strange unreality, which approximates certain states of mind that can be experienced only in dream or dream-space.
