Frances Mabel Hollams (British 1877-1963) was a popular British painter of horses and dogs. Hollams typically painted her subjects on wooden panels with no background, so that the grain of the wood remains visible. She grew up at Dene Park in Shipbourne and later moved to Puttenden Manor near the hamlet of Dunks Green.
Hollams studied under the artist Frank Calderdon (1865-1943) and, at a time when most schools did not accept female students, she studied in Paris at the Académie Julian. She was also one of the first female Royal Academicians, exhibiting eight paintings , and in 1899 was elected to the Society of Women Artists.
Hollams was married to land agent Charles Lionel Fox who worked for the Fairlawne Estate, Tonbridge, Kent. The Fairlawne Estate was owned by the Cazelet family, who were well-known racehorse owners and trainers. Major Peter Cazalet was the trainer of horses owned by the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother – who used to stay at the estate on visits.
Cairn Terrier
In the lush green landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, amidst the rugged terrain and craggy cliffs, roamed a tenacious little companion known as the Cairn Terrier. These spirited dogs, with their shaggy coats and boundless energy, have a history as rich and colorful as their character.
Originating from the harsh and unforgiving landscapes of Scotland, Cairn Terriers were bred for a noble purpose—to hunt and control vermin that plagued farms and households. Their name derives from the cairns, or piles of stones, where they would fearlessly venture to flush out prey from their rocky hiding places.
Dating back centuries, Cairn Terriers were cherished for their unwavering loyalty, agility, and determination in the face of adversity. They were the steadfast companions of farmers and crofters, tirelessly patrolling the rugged terrain in search of rats, mice, and other pests that threatened their livelihoods.
But it wasn't just their hunting prowess that endeared Cairn Terriers to the hearts of Scots. These pint-sized warriors possessed a charm and charisma that transcended their humble origins. Their playful antics and boundless energy brought joy and laughter to households across the Highlands.
As time passed, Cairn Terriers found their way into the hearts and homes of dog lovers around the world. Their plucky demeanor and endearing personality charmed their way into the spotlight, making them beloved companions and cherished family members - as depicted here, in "Bob".
