About the Item

Mid Century Bay Area Abstract Expressionist Cats and Birds Composition in Acrylic on Paper How many cats and birds do you see? This striking painting by San Francisco's Bay Area abstract expressionist artist Honora Berg (American, 1897-1985) is layered with playful images inviting the viewer to find and count the many cats and birds. The lively backdrop of orange and black squiggles implies movement yet the piece remains a well-balanced composition. Unsigned: Acquired with a collection of the artist's work. Condition: Good; normal rippling from paint on paper Unframed; new mat provided Paper size: 23.75"H x 18"W Image size: 23.25"H x 17.25"W Mat size: 28"H x 22"W Honora Berg, an Abstract Expressionist and Bay Area Figurative School artist, studied at the San Francisco Art Institute with David Park, Elmer Bischoff and James Budd Dixon. Berg's friend Edith Truesdell — David Park's aunt — suggested a move to California in 1951 to study under Park. She exhibited at the 25th Annual Drawing, Print and Sculpture Exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 1961. Provenance: We acquired this piece as part of a larger collection from the art dealer whom purchased the entirety of the Honora Berg Estate.

  • Woman, Dog & Spring Flowers, Large Scale Figurative Abstract with Petroglyphs

Woman, Dog & Spring Flowers, Large Scale Figurative Abstract with Petroglyphs by Cindy Kane Absolutely stunning large scale abstract expressionist painting titled "Bending Forward," by San Francisco and now Martha's Vineyard artist Cindy Kane (American, b. 1957). This unique monumental piece, created in 1987, has a netherworld primal quality depicting a petroglyph-like blonde woman and her animal spirit dog bending toward a flower-strewn earth. Additional petroglyph vignettes add mystery to narrative. Signed and dated "Kane '87" upper right. Unframed. Image size: 66.5"H x 84"W. Her early works were influenced by her memories of these hieroglyphs, and embellished with symbols from her dreams. “I hope [that viewers] get what I get from my work, which is enjoyment, visual satisfaction, and a story — whatever their own story is,” she said. “I can’t give them one, but I can tell my own, and the story they take with them is something personal.” Her early work was influenced by the experience of living and working at the bottom of the Grand Canyon National Park, where she had the opportunity to document Anasazi Indian pictographs in pen and ink drawings. These images would inform her work for years to come. While working in Grand Canyon National Park, she became familiar with the Anasazi Indian ruins...
