About the Item
Jess Wathen's "Toxic" is an original, handmade acrylic painting that depicts a florescent green moth.
I'm relatively late to the painting practice with my experience mostly in graphite and charcoal. I'm self-taught, and I suspect my strong foundation in drawing helped me quickly adapt. Art for me has always been therapeutic, but it also feels like an itch that never gets completely scratched. Internal demands that are temporarily quelled only by creation. I didn't seriously begin pursuing an art career or painting for that matter until a publishing company offered an opportunity in 2015. Since then, I've also shifted my focus from graphite portraiture to painted wildlife.
When painting, I want to produce impressive and evocative images. It's less about the narrative and more about stirring emotion. It's fascinating how profoundly a single color, or arrangement of marks, can convey a feeling to affect a viewer's mood. Finding that combination to compose stunning excellence with such influence captivates me and partially fuels my ambition.
