About the Item

Available for sale from Big Sky Fine Art; this original oil painting by John Theodore Kenney dated 1969. The painting is presented and supplied in a sympathetic and contrasting contemporary frame to suit the subject colouration. The painting is signed and dated lower right. John Theodore Eardley Kenney, better known as John T. Kenney was one of the finer artists of the twentieth century, although a man whose work is better recognised than his name. A generation of children will be familiar with his work as an illustrator for no less than thirty-one Ladybird books. His most famous illustrations however were those for the Thomas the Tank Engine books. Kenney was born in Leicestershire in 1911, and indeed spent most of his life there. He was educated at the City Boys’ School, and later studied art at the Leicester College of Art before taking a job as a commercial artist at a firm called J.E. Slater, where he later met his future wife, Peggy. In World War II Kenney served first in the 44th Searchlight Regiment and later with the 21st Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, during which time he made many sketches of the D-Day landings and the sweep of the Allies across Europe. Some of these drawings are now included in the records of the Regiment at the Royal Army Museum at Woolwich. Edmund Ward commissioned him to illustrate a series of children’s books called “Hunter Hawk, Skyway Detective”, and “The Eight Famous Engines”, books 12-17 of the Railway Series by the Rev W. Awdry, which later became better known as the Thomas the Tank Engine series. He also illustrated several historical tales for Ladybird Books including “The Story of Nelson”, ‘Florence Nightingale” and “King Alfred the Great”. In 1952 he retired from his work as a commercial artist, partly because of eyesight problems, and from then worked on a freelance basis. He had sketched horses from his earliest childhood days and now indulged his passion for horses, and the sports associated with them. He became part of the local hunting scene, and spent many happy days with the Fernie and Quorn hunts, both riding and painting. His paintings of the hunts, of racing, and polo have a real sense of action yet sensitivity. Kenney wrote two books himself, which he also illustrated, namely “The Grey Pony” in 1954 and “The Shetland Pony” in 1955. Kenney’s work is strong and direct; he was a tremendous draftsman and showed a great understanding of horses and hounds. His pictures are full of atmosphere and his use of light and feel for colour is excellent. He worked mainly in oils, but also in watercolours and sometimes in pen and ink. Kenney was influenced by the works of Alfred Mannings and in turn he was a strong influence on the work of the notable equine artist Neil Cawthorne, who he helped considerably in the early stages of his career. Sadly, Kenney suffered chronic ill health for much of his life and for this reason his travels and indeed his artistic output was limited. In 1968 he lost the sight of one eye completely but he continued to paint until the end of his life. He was known as a man of great kindness, modesty and humour. Kenney received many commissions and became particularly popular in the USA. In 1972, the year of his death, he had an exhibition at Abercrombie and Fitch, New York and in Chicago. Nearer to home he had works shown in exhibitions in Ackermann’s Gallery, London and the Goldsby Gallery, Leicester. This original oil on board depicts a dark brown mare and her foal. They both have the same rich colouring, the same white blaze on their head, black mane and tail. They are walking together in harmony, further emphasizing the close bond between them. The overall scene is light, positive and uplifting.
