Charming mid century still life of fruit, vase and black cat by Monterey artist Joseph Tanous (American, b. 1925), c. 1940-50. Signed lower left corner. Presented in rustic painted wood frame. Image size: 24"H x 30"W. Framed size: 25"H x 31"L x 1"D. Joseph (Joe) Tanous was born in Hettinger, North Dakota on January 10, 1925. He was raised in North Dakota. He spent time during World War II in the Pacific. Tanous studied art at the California College of Arts and Crafts where he earned in BFA degree, then spent 10 years working in commercial art in Los Angeles and San Francisco. He earned his MA from the University of California, Davis. Early in his career he was a teaching assistant for famous painter Wayne Thiebaud. Tanous moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1963. Since 1967 he has combined teaching, with his studio painting endeavors. His works have won 1st Place awards at the Crocker Museum and the Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art. Tanous has been an Artist Member of the prestigious Carmel Art Association since 1971. He has served on their Board of Directors in 1975-76, 1980-81, 1983, and 1988. He currently resides on the Monterey Peninsula.
