This work is a fully realized study for the foreground compositional element in Dupré's 1882 oil painting, "In Pasture", held in the permanent collection of the Kemper Art Museum, Washington University, St. Louis, (see photo, above). In 1886, this large work was purchased by member subscription for the museum's permanent collection.
Julien Dupré first exhibited at the 1876 Paris Salon and, thereafter, almost continuously until his death in 1910. Over the course of a long and distinguished career, he was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including a gold medal at the Paris Fair of 1889. In 1992, he was invested as a companion of the Legion of Honor for his services to art.
Julien Dupré was one of the leading exponents of the second generation of Realist painters. This group included Barbizon artists and, also, more committed realists such as Leon Lhermitte and Jules Bastien-Lepage. Like the earlier generation of Realists that included Jean-Francois Millet and Jules Breton, these artists focused on the artistic elevation of French rural life and the labors of the rural peasantry that sustained it.
As Hollister Sturges, the former chief curator of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, has observed, "...Salon critics rightly perceived Julien Dupré as Breton's closest follower. Through idealization of form, he invested his peasant women with a heroic aura, though unlike his predecessor, his figures are usually engaged in vigorous action. His landscapes, with their cloudy skies and varied motifs, are also much more active. Their high key color and spontaneous brushwork have a vivacity and freshness that distinguishes them from the sober calm of Breton's scenes. Dupré's most enduring and powerful image is that of a single, Herculean, female, positioned dramatically and elegantly in the foreground of the painting, pitching hay. His finely modeled figures pay tribute to his academic training, as well as his study of the works of Breton and Bouguereau; while his freer handling of the background areas, at times done with a palette knife, shows the influence of the Impressionists." (Jules Breton and the French Rural Tradition"; Joslyn Art Museum, 1982.)
Julien Dupre's work is held in the permanent collection of numerous public museums including:

Julien Dupré
Julien Dupré was considered by most to be one of the leading exponents of the second generation of Realist painters; a group that also includes Leon Lhermitte, Jules Bastien-Lepage and Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret. Like J.F. Millet and J. Breton, before them, these artists devoted their artistic careers to the depiction of the toils of the French peasant - often seen hard at work in the fields. He exhibited his first painting at the Paris Salon in 1876 and became a regular exhibitor until his death in 1910. In 1880 he was awarded a third-class medal for Faucheurs de Luzerne, and in 1881 he received a second-class medal for his La Recolte des Foins. He was honored with a gold medal at the Paris Fair of 1889 and in 1892 was awarded the Legion of Honor. His work was sought after internationally, and he found a good market in the United States.

Four Bedouin ride camels alongside a flurry of goats, carrying lambs and hens in saddlebags. Other figures clothed in Middle Eastern garments walk with them, and the busy scene fades into a dusty, evening landscape. The colour palette is vibrant and hued with dusky pinks and oranges, giving the impression that these Bedouin are returning back to camp.
