Julius Paul Junghanns
Antique Horse Painting of a "Dapple Horse in its Stall" Julius Paul Junghanns

About the Item

Antique Horse Painting “Dapple Horse in its Stall” Julius Paul Junghanns (German, 1876-1958) Watercolor, gouache, paper 10 7/8 x 8 1/2 (18 x 5 1/4 frame) inches Signed lower left center and lower right For a watercolor, this study of a dapple is amazingly rich and textural. There's a tremendous amount and depth and warmth. When recently viewed by an art consultant, he rightly described it "as full of fireworks." Julius Paul Junghanns was a highly revered animalier portrait painter, particularly that of cattle and horses though he also painted the portraits of his three children with their family dogs. The style he develops is very close to the Barbizoniers. Junghanns much preferred painting in plein air and in his compositions, he enhances the very close relationship between humans and animals; a bond characterized by very intense emotions and sensations that influenced his real and artistic life. Cattle were considered a very important resource and a sure parameter for evaluating the wealth of rural society. Families raised livestock with care and dedication because it was the main source of livelihood. Junghanns attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and continued his specialization in Munich where he moved from 1899, he was a student of Heinrich Von Zugel, when he began his course of studies, he knew exactly what he wanted to become ... an Animalier painter, this desire stayed true for the rest of his life. He obtained numerous medals and awards for his works, was appointed a member of the Bund Deutschen Zeichneder Kunstler commission in Munich, and later joined the Bildender Kunstler Sezession Association in Munich. He also was distinguished in the field of academic teaching as he was appointed Director of the Chair of Animalier and Plein Air Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf where he remained there for over 40 years. Junghanns is a well-known painter in Germany, Europe and the world over. Many of his works are part of public and private collections and have been exhibited in art galleries and museums in Berlin, Hagen, Munich, Düsseldorf, Bonn, Gdansk, Konigsberg, Krefeld, Chemnitz, Karlsruhe, Manheim, Vienna, London, Madrid, Antwerp, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Boston, etc. This level of internationality is especially notable considering his artistic career coincided with the restrictive period of the Third Reich. Junghanns devoted himself to subjects of the animalier genre, linked to everyday life while maintaining a dense and very accentuated symbolic meaning. In his finest works, nature played an undisputed role of protagonist. In 1958 his funeral took place with a very large audience in attendales about his life. To date there is no single archive that encompasses all the works starting from his numerous sketches to his paintings and small scenes. Distinguished professors and students of the Academy of Fine Arts of Dusseldorf paid homage to him, and the newspapers featured numerous articles that maintain a vision of artistic integrity and a testimony to his skill and devotion. His works of art can be found institutional and private collections internationally.

  • Antique Portrait of 6 Dogs on Porcelain by Maison Pichenot-Loebnitz ca. 1870s
    Located in SANTA FE, NM
Antique and exceptionally rare and fine Portrait of 6 Dogs on Enameled Ceramic Maison Pichenot-Loebnitz France, ca. 1870. 25 x 8 (31 x 13 framed) inches This rectangular panel made of enameled ceramic was made by Jules Loebnitz in the second half of the 19th century depicts a suite of 6 very fine canines in a landscape setting. The Pichenot-Loebnitz factory was founded by Mr Pichenot, grandfather of Jules Loebnitz, in 1833. From 1841, Mr Pichenot created a new, innovative method of uncrackable earthenware panels for architectural mantels, winning a medal at the Exhibition of 1844. In 1857, Jules Loebnitz, an artist as much as an industrialist, became director of the factory. For his first major job, Loebnitz passionately collaborated with architect Félix Duban on the restoration of the Blois Castle, recreating the antique tiles of the mantelpieces. He then went to work with the most prominent architects of his times; Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, Laval, Charles Garnier, Just Lisch and Paul Sédille. A friendship was born in 1867 between Paul Sédille, the architect of the Printemps department stores and the Basilica of Bois-Chenu in Domrémy-la-Pucelle, and Jules Loebnitz that would lead to a tight, long-lasting professional, artistic, and intellectual collaboration. This was an important meeting between the theorist of polychrome architecture and the man who had pushed French ceramic art considerably forward, allowing for large, enameled earthenware plates decorated with very bright and long-lasting glass-like colors. Many architectural projects were born from the collaboration of Sédille and Loebnitz: World’s fair pavilions, apartment buildings, villas, hotels, and monuments. During the Great Exhibition of 1878, Paul Sédille created the door of the Palais des Beaux-arts, while Jules Loebnitz was in charge of the ceramic decoration of the facade. A reporter covering the 1878 World’s fair described the monumental door...
