Kyung Kim
"Alaskan Pollock II"

1940

About the Item

SALE ONE WEEK ONLY This painting of four different species of fish that can be found in South Korea is from the mid-20th century Korean artist Kim Kyung. Seafood from both the seas that surround the peninsula and from its rivers are an integral part of the livelihood and cuisine of Koreans. Kim Kyung (in Hanja, 金耕, in Hangul 김경) was born in South Korea, his real name, under the current Revised Romanization was Kim Gyeong-Eun (in Hanja 金萬斗, in Hangul 김경은). His name follows the East Asian convention of family name first, though some Western galleries choose to reorder his name with the Western convention as Kyung Kim. He was born in Hadong, Gyeongnam during the Imperial Japanese occupation, as the eldest son of a poor farm family, and at the age of 18 he entered the art department of Japan University. In 1943, he returned to his hometown to escape being drafted into the Japanese army and briefly worked at Jinkyo Elementary School. He moved around frequently from Jinju, to Seoul, and Masan but settled in Busan in 1949 after the liberation of the Korean peninsula. In 1953, he contributed to the formation of the modernization group in Busan by participating in the Gyeongnam Artists Association exhibition and Tobyeok Dongin exhibition, and raised his students while serving as an art teacher in Busan High School. After his first solo exhibition in 1956, he also published illustrations for newspapers. In 1958, he started living in Seoul when he was appointed to Inchang High School in Seoul, and he exhibited works of abstract tendencies while exhibiting at the Modern Art Association Exhibition. At that time, Busan Technical High School was selected as a target school of UNKRA (United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency) and was supplied with learning materials such as the latest equipment and supplies. Art students were also able to practice with various art materials that were difficult to even see at other schools. Kim Kyung was buried in the studio and devoted himself to production, while also devoting himself to training the next batch of Korean artists. He taught watercolors, oil paintings, prints and sculptures. He took a natural approach to art, such as shaping and coloring out of clay and baking terracotta in an electric kiln. The disciples who received his guidance at that time were Kim Cheong-jung (sculptor) Park Chun-geun (Dong-A University professor) Ahn Kwang-mo (architectist) Jang Sang-man (sculptor). In 1956, he participated in the ‘Modern Art Association’, the first contemporary painting group in Korea. In 1957, he held his first solo exhibition in the exhibition room of Mihwadang Department Store and exhibited at the Cheongmaek Dongin Exhibition. Most of his works are about cattle, pollock, and women. In 1958, he moved to Seoul with Park Go-seok's arrangement and worked as a teacher at Inchang High School, focusing on production. He continued his friendship with painters in Busan and produced stained glass for the Cheongtap Grill, but it was destroyed due to renovation of the building. In 1964, he continued his work even after he collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage and held a solo exhibition, but he passed away the following year. In 1966, his friends held a memorial exhibition of Kim Gyeong Confucianism in Seoul, and in 1978, his students in Busan held an exhibition to honor him.

  • "My Best Friend", Oil, Hand-Painted Frame, Female, Pet, Rich Earth Tones
    By WILLIAM GIRARD
    Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY In “My Best Friend” Girard has captured a tender symbiotic relationship between the woman and her sweet pet. The entire piece swirls with the soft beauty and magical exchange shared by the two individuals. The frame does not enclose so much as enfolds the scene and its decorations are an integral part of the work. Upon close inspection tiny animal figures cavort in the air adding to the spell - almost like fairy characters from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer’s Night Dream.” The jewelry is beautifully render as are the loving expressions of the faces of both the animal and the woman. The composition is filled with objects and figures but captured softly and in rich detail. The figures appear to be completely self-absorbed and the decorative elements about their heads could suggest the intensity of their thoughts and feelings. Girard was a Detroit figurative painter and teacher at College for Creative Studies, Detroit, Michigan where he taught for 30 years. Other College for Creative Studies (formerly Center for Creative Studies) faculty and graduates include Richard Jerzy, Harry Bertoia, Doug Chaing (currently director of Lucas Film), Stephen Dinehart (game maker, writer, designer connected with The David Lynch Foundation), Tyree Guyton (international artist), Herb Babcock, Jerome Feretti, Kevin Siembieda (writer, designer and publisher of role-playing games), Renee Radell, Philip Pearlstein, Charles McGee (nationally recognized African American sculptor of animal and dancing spirits), Philip Pearlstein (2000 Honorary Doctorate, Modern Realism style), and John Louis Krieger...

  • "Lamb", Oil on Canvas
    By Renata Palubinskas
    Located in Detroit, MI
This "Lamb" painting vibrantly pops with hyper-realistic color. It depicts a highly detailed lamb standing in against a blue background. Could it be an empty room? Could it be the sky? "Lamb" has a sweet look with its slight smile and holding a cute pink flower. Its awash in a cartoonish blue with clouds and cloudy farm animals. This pairs with the cow painting but is sold separately. Renata Palubinskas was born in 1968 in Kaunas, Lithuania, at the time still in the Soviet Union as the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic. She received her diploma in Fine Art and Restoration from St. Zukas Technium of Applied Arts in 1989. After working at the M.K. Ciurlionis State Museum of Art, she emigrated to the United States in the 1990s, basing herself in Detroit. Renata's work rethinks historic iconography while intentionally addressing the modern world through a new perspective. The characters in her paintings are often caught between the struggle of good and evil. That struggle represents the choice of trying to obtain immediate gratification or realization of the self, and the haunting life experiences with latent possibilities for death. Renata uses schematic compositions with purposefully positioned figures and other visual elements. To attract attention to the most significant figures, she often ornate their garments with intricate patterns. They are typically placed in either a serene landscape or an interior setting with a threatening presence around them. Her work has been exhibited in Collected Detroit...

This "Cow" painting vibrantly pops with hyper-realistic color. It depicts a highly detailed cow standing in against a blue background. Could it be an empty room? Could it be the sky? There is a very playful atmosphere as the cow is holding a dandelion gone to seed and the wonder is whether it will make a wish and blow. Its awash in a cartoonish blue with clouds and cloudy farm animals. This pairs with the lamb painting but is sold separately. Outside Size: 30 1/2" x 36 5/8" A recent discovery of a painting that appears to be Farrar’s family dog. This was done when he was just fifteen years old. As a teenager in the 1940s, Farrar received much local acclaim in the Washington D.C. art Scene. Words like “Child Prodigy”, “Brilliant” and “Gifted” were used to describe him in the local newspaper. He had a great bout of early success which included developing patrons among Washington DC’s art elite but this was short lived as he was afflicted with schizophrenia and alcoholism as an adult causing him to spend much of his life in mental institutions. In 1942, Farrar won the Washington Times-Herald's outdoor art fair. This painting was executed the following year when he was 15 (1943).
