About the Item

Michael Lyne (1912–1989) was a distinguished British painter and illustrator, celebrated for his vivid depictions of rural life, hunting scenes, and British wildlife. Born in 1912, Lyne developed a deep affinity for the countryside at an early age, and this passion would become the heart of his artistic vision. He is particularly known for his work in the mid-20th century, where he became one of the most respected sporting and wildlife artists of his generation. Trained at the Worcester Royal Grammar School and later honing his skills through private study and observation, Lyne never formally enrolled in an art academy. His natural talent, however, and his close connection to the countryside and its traditions—especially foxhunting and beagling—lent authenticity and vitality to his work. Lyne's illustrations regularly appeared in sporting publications such as The Field and Country Life, and he also authored and illustrated several books, including Hunting Sketches and The Sport of Our Fathers. Lyne worked in various media, but he particularly favored watercolors and gouache (bodycolor), which allowed him to capture quick impressions of movement and light—an essential quality for portraying animals in motion or the dynamic atmosphere of the field. His art stands as a record of mid-century rural England and is valued for its energy, realism, and sympathy with nature. Hare Hiding in the Grass This intimate and spontaneous gouache sketch by Michael Lyne captures a fleeting moment in the English countryside: a hare crouching low amidst tall, wind-blown grass. Executed in a loose, sketchy style characteristic of field studies, the painting is rich in earth tones—muted greens, ochres, and soft browns—with bold, quick brushstrokes suggesting the texture of tangled vegetation. The hare itself is partially obscured, its mottled brown fur blending naturally with its surroundings. Only the glint of its alert eye and the delicate curve of one upright ear betray its presence. The grass around it is painted with energy and immediacy, suggesting a breeze moving across the field and the animal’s instinctive stillness as it seeks camouflage. Lyne’s choice of bodycolor—opaque watercolor—adds depth and texture, enhancing the sense of atmosphere. There's a spontaneity to the composition that suggests it was painted from a vivid memory, emphasizing observation over formal composition. The work is not only a study of an animal in its habitat but a moment of near invisibility—a testament to Lyne’s gift for capturing both the wildness and vulnerability of nature. The works size is 21.5 x 29.5 Painting and frame conservation services are provided upon request. Please message us for further advice.
