2000

About the Item

Agoni, 2000 Etching and acquatint, inches 39.3 x 39.3 ( cm 100 x 100) Nicola Villa is a young prominent Italian figurative watercolorist and an excellent etcher, he is also a master of aquatint. Born in 1976, Lecco, Italy. Lives and works in Genoa. In 2004 he received a degree in architecture , with a final thesis on landscape design, from the Politecnico of Milan, whereupon he decided to devote himself to painting. He started painting in 2000 and his first personal exhibition was in 2001 at the Mosaico Gallery in Chiasso, Switzerland. In 2003, he took part in the exhibition 'Giovanni Testori, un ritratto' at Palazzo Leone da Perego in Legnano. In the same year he exhibited at Montrasio Arte in Milan as part of the Premio Morlotti curated by Giorgio Seveso. In 2005 he won the Premio Morlotti in Imbersago. In 2006 his first solo exhibition was held at Montrasio Arte in Milan (the catalogue was introduced by Raffaele Bedarida and Stefano Crespi). In the same year, Galleria Bellinzona in Milan held another solo exhibition of his work (the catalogue included an essay by Lodovico Meneghetti). Also in 2006, one of his paintings was selected for the Aletti Prize at the Verona Fair. In 2007, a solo exhibition was held in Lecco at Galleria Bellinzona, and the same gallery exhibited some of his engravings at the Salon des Estampes in Paris. Also in 2007, he was invited by Daniele Astrologo Abadal, author of the essay in the catalogue, to exhibit at the Museo Civico Floriano Bodini. On this occasion, the Museum acquired a work that became part of the permanent collection. In the same year, he produced the graphic animation for the booktrailer: 'Kids & revolution' by Marco Mancassola. Again in 2007 at the invitation of Raffaele Bedarida he moved to New York as part of the Harlem Studio project. Also in 2007, he won the Italian edition of the Premio Celeste. The artist is particularly keen on depicting the human condition, detailing in his painting images derived from his daily walks through the streets. The life of Villa’s characters belongs to a story without plot, where figures chase one another beyond their physical presence into an imaginative athmosphere of elusive, subtle anxiety that surrounds all of us.
