About the Item
36"x36" oil on canvas, depicting an eagle-owl perched on a gilded gold armchair with green and white brocade upholstery. A woodpecker and a small songbird sit on the arms of the chair. Birch branches are leaned against the chair with their green leaves complimenting the color of the fabric of the chair. Presented unframed, signed on the reverse.
This original oil painting by Thomas Broadbent was created to honor Flaco the owl. Flaco was a male Eurasian eagle-owl who escaped his long-time enclosure at Central Park Zoo in New York City after someone cut the protective netting in February 2023. Flaco subsequently resided in and around Central Park. In February 2024, one year after his escape, Flaco died after colliding with a building in Manhattan's Upper West Side.
Thomas Broadbent is well known for his contemporary naturalistic depictions of the intersection of nature and man. Thomas Broadbent has shown extensively throughout the U.S. as well as internationally. Broadbent’s work won the PULSE Prize for best solo booth at PULSE Art Fair. His work was subsequently featured in “Mission to Space” at the Children's Museum of Manhattan. His work is in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Broadbent’s numerous solo exhibitions include the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Croxhapox Art Gallery in Gent, Belgium, The Voorkamer Gallery in Lier, Belgium, Inspace gallery in Beijing, China and the Newark Arts Council. Broadbent’s work has been reviewed in The New York Times, The Star-Ledger, New Jersey, NY Arts Magazine, The Brooklyn Rail and numerous other publications.
