Antique Set of Twelve Chinese Pith Paintings Depicting Butterflies

19th Century

About the Item

Antique set of twelve Chinese pith paintings depicting butterflies Chinese, 19th Century Panel: Height 19cm, width 28cm Frame: Height 35cm, width 34cm, depth 1.5cm This superb set of twelve watercolour paintings depicts various insects. Elaborately patterned and rendered in bright shades, each painting has a different composition of insect subjects. Whilst butterflies are the predominant theme, other insects such as grasshoppers, beetles, and dragonflies also appear. The vivid insects stand out beautifully against the creamy white background. One of the paintings is slightly stained yellow. The watercolours are rendered on pith paper, which due to its lower absorbency allows the paint to pool on the surface like an enamel, adding to the vividity of the studies. Each painting is enclosed in a red painted frame, adorned with painted oval panels of insects that complement the theme of the paintings themselves. Pith paper paintings such as these were designed for the export market, and typically depicted customs or wildlife indigenous to China that a Western visitor could take home as a souvenir. These twelve paintings are rendered with incredible delicacy, and the charming subject makes them a true antique collectable.

  • Antique Orientalist Oil on Board 'Desert Bedouin', by José Benito Ortega
    By José Benito Ortega
    Located in London, GB
Antique Orientalist Oil on Board 'Desert Bedouin', by Spanish Artist Ortega Spanish, early 20th Century Frame: Height 51cm, width 59cm, depth 2cm Board: Height 44cm, width 53cm, depth 0.5cm Fluidly painted, this vibrant oil on board depicts a dusty Orientalist scene. Four Bedouin ride camels alongside a flurry of goats, carrying lambs and hens in saddlebags. Other figures clothed in Middle Eastern garments walk with them, and the busy scene fades into a dusty, evening landscape. The colour palette is vibrant and hued with dusky pinks and oranges, giving the impression that these Bedouin are returning back to camp. The cropped composition also gives a dynamic feel to the picture: a glance into early 20th Century desert life. The present painting was created by Spanish artist José Benito Ortega...

Pencil and watercolour heightened with gold paint and gum arabic on paper, 36.8 x 27.9 cm A gift so majestic, it made kings blush, and a gift so grand, it would startle Europe into a craze. Pasha Muhammad Ali of Egypt (1805-1848) did it in 1827: he sent to Europe three magical spotted, horned creatures, each with a neck reaching the skies and legs as long as a house is high. One giraffe to King Charles X of France, one to Francis I of Austria and the most fabled one to King George IV of England. A curious sight for Europeans, who had not seen such a beast since the Medici giraffe in 1487. Few animals created more of a stir in Europe than these royal...
