The symbolism of the peacock is bright and epic: shining glory, immortality, greatness, incorruptibility. The peacock is a symbol of pride and vanity. In the ancient cultures of India and Iran the magnificent peacock's tail became a symbol of the all-seeing Sun and eternal cosmic cycles. The image of a bird is considered one of the strongest talismans for prosperity and wealth.
Representatives of Christianity respectfully treat peacocks, considering them a symbol of divine reverence. The "eyes" on the feathers symbolize the "all-seeing" Church. The ability to renew (change of plumage) caused Christians to associate with immortality. The legend about incorruptibility of the peacock meat made it a symbol of resurrection. Peacocks is often depicted on icons dedicated to Christmas also. The Great Martyr Varvara holds the feather of a sacred bird in her hand as a sign of her immortality.
