About the Item

French school of the seventeenth century Claude Lefebvre (Fontainebleau 1632 - Paris 1675), attributable Portrait of a young gentleman in armor oil on oval canvas, 89 x 70 cm. in frame, richly carved and gilded with flower decoration, 110 x 90 cm. This fascinating portrait, which illustrates the effigy of a gentleman in ceremonial armor, is to be placed in the best production of the French painter Claude Lefebvre, one of the most significant portraitist of his time, a great interpreter of the French school of the mid-seventeenth century. Son of the painter Jean Lefèbvre (1600-1675), the young Claude was first a pupil of Claude d'Hoey (1586-1660) in his hometown, Fontainebleau, then of Eustache Le Sueur and finally of Charles Le Brun; from the latter in particular he will inherit the major influences, specializing with excellent results in the art of the portrait. In 1663, at the age of thirty, he became a member of the Royal Academy of painting and sculpture. The work that consecrated him among the greats of his time was the portrait of the French minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert from 1666, now exhibited at the Palace of Versailles, in the Louis XIV room. His temporary stay in London was decisive for his painting, when he was invited to paint at the court of kings Charles II and James II, where he absorbed the pictorial sensitivity of court painters, including John Riley, Anthony van Dyck and Sir Peter Lely. Some of his paintings can be admired at the Palace of Versailles, the National Gallery in London, the Louvre and other museums especially in France (Metz, Orleans ...). The painting proposed by us is a fine example of his skill in the field of portraiture and immortalizes a man of high social extraction with an austere portly, in representative armor, with the canonical lace tie, typical of the French and English fashion of the time, and depicted according to the most classic tradition, in three quarters with the gaze turned to the viewer. To adorn the armor a silk scarf that surrounds his chest and tied at the shoulder with a red ribbon. Note the refined rendering of the facial features, the sharpness of the contours highlighted by the light, characterized by a strong expressiveness but at the same time self-confident and therefore not excessively caricatured in the expression. STORAGE: The work is presented in an excellent state of conservation and is completed by a magnificent antique frame in carved and gilded wood with a rich carving at the four ends with a flower motif.
