From the New York Times , < Ms. Hillsmith combined Cubism with what she called “an early American feeling.” She added identifiably American motifs to a style influenced by Picasso, Miró and especially Gris….. she studied at the Art Students League, where her teachers included Yasuo Kuniyoshi and William Zorach …. Her circle of friends included George L. K. Morris, Suzy Frelinghuysen and Will Barnet.
As she developed an abstract style, Ms. Hillsmith exhibited her work in three shows at Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of This Century Gallery in Manhattan and taught briefly at the legendary Black Mountain College in Asheville, N.C. Starting in 1946, she worked at Atelier 17, Stanley William Hayter’s intaglio printmaking workshop, which was then in New York, alongside European artists like Miró, Yves Tanguy and Jacques Lipchitz.
She had her first show in New York at Jimmy Ernst’s Norlyst Gallery in 1943. In the 1950s and ’60s she had solo shows at the Charles Egan Gallery and the Peridot Gallery. A retrospective of her work was held at the Currier Art Gallery in Manchester, N.H., in 1987. She was later represented bu Susan Teller Gallery >
