Adèle Kindt
Une Affection Tacite - 19th Century Romantic Oil Painting Girl & Loving Admirer

1862

About the Item

‘Une Affection Tacite’ by Adèle Kindt (1804-1893). The painting – which depicts a young woman and her ardent admirer – is signed by the artist and dated 1862. Born into a family of artists, Marie-Adélaïde Kindt was a pupil of the great French neoclassical painter Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) before entering the studio of Sophie Rude (1797-1867) and subsequently the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels where she studied under François-Joseph Navez (1787-1869). Kindt’s history paintings and portraiture are very much in the style of Nevez in particular and exemplify both his Franco-Belgian Academicism and Bonapartist sympathies. Kindt’s subsequent subject pictures are far more Romantic, as evidenced in the current work being offered here. Between 1825 and 1879, Adèle Kindt exhibited at all the major Belgian and Dutch Salons, and today her paintings are to be found in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Brussels City Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, the Mauritshuis in The Hague, and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. French Romantic School, 19th Century Portrait of a man, a selfportrait ? oil on paper 17.5 x 12 cm oval Framed under glass : 43 x 34.5 cm This rather mysterious portrait is perhaps a self-portrait of the artist who painted it. This is suggested by the three-quarter pose and the gaze fixed on the viewer. What this man seems to be staring at is himself. Similarly, the model's appearance is reminiscent of the image of the romantic, bohemian, tortured artist. It's also very interesting that he used a range of dark colours to reinforce this idea of melancholy. It has been suggested that this small oil on paper is close to the art of François Bonvin (1817-1887) and Théodule Ribot...
