Antonio Soler
Antonio Soler, "Down the Slope", 32x32 Textured Ski Winter Landscape Painting

2023

About the Item

This cheerful and whimsical piece, "Down the Slope" is a 32x32 mixed media painting on canvas by artist Antonio Soler capturing a crowded scene of skiers on a frosted slope. Bundled in colorful outfits of puff jackets and snow pants, these tiny textured people propel towards the base of a large alpine backcountry mountain. Soler's thick, textured use of paint create dimension and depth, raising elements of the painting off the canvas to create an illusion to the eye. Gondolas swing and pass overhead. About the artist: Antonio Garcia Soler was born in 1957 in the Alicante region of Spain. Born into an artistic family. Antonio’s father Jorge, taught in the “Escuela de Bellas Artes de Alicante” and passed on his passion for art to his son when he was very young. After completing his artistic studies in the prestigious “San Carlos Fine Art School of Valencia”, Soler developed a technique – now his signature style – that lies between realism and hyperrealism, capturing the essence of each scene while also heightening its impact through colour and atmosphere. Antonio is particularly well known for his ability to recreate the elusive nature of water – colour, shadow, reflection and transparency are used to emulate the sea’s many movements and moods.Soler loves the Mediterranean. He has lived close to this sea all his life which is reflected in the light of his canvases. Among his favorites subjects are cliffs and seascapes. He is famous for his water transparences. His works are featured in many individual and collective exhibits, and hang in private collections in Europe.

Childhood, a reoccurring theme in Darlene Cole’s work, is represented by prepubescent girls and boys, engaged in some type of action. Without adult supervision, these activities confer on Cole’s children an adult-like aura, empowering them. The artist cites Neil Postman’s 1982 book about the decline in innocence in American culture The Disappearance of Childhood as a text that informs her work. In it, Postman argues that communications technology, such as the invention of the television and later, the Internet, contributed to children losing their innocence, thus transforming them into young adults. A source of inspiration for Cole are the works of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of English painters, poets and critics, founded in 1848. They studied nature attentively, employed vivid colours and depicted unconventional-looking women. Just like in Pre-Raphaelite works, the girls in Cole’s paintings embody enigma, distance, and beauty. The past, in general, is a great source of inspiration for the artist. Cole’s cottage, or ‘artist’s retreat’ as she calls it, was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Since she kept all the original furniture and linens intact, the cottage, on the side of a lake, seems to belong to the past. Nature, another omnipresent theme in Cole’s work, is in many works represented by flowers, such as pink David Austin roses...
