About the Item
This acrylic painting is a triptych (three panels, each one 20" x 16" in dimension) of figures portraying aspects of Caribbean music and beliefs, The center figure shows archangel Gabriel found in the Bible. On either side, are figures of Afro-Caribbean spirits. In this triptych each figure holds an instrument currently used in many Afro-Caribbean and Brazilian music. The triptych is sold unframed and the pieces are signed in the back.
Armando Soto, a major exponent of the Nuyorican movement in the visual arts, was born in New York City to Puerto Rican parents. A founder of the Taller Boricua in East Harlem, along with other Puerto Rican-related artists, Soto’s work fuses Taino, African, and European motifs, with a strong reliance on their mythic significance. He has a studio in Troy, NY and exhibits regularly in the region.
