About the Item
‘Une Fille de la Nymphe’ by Auguste-Émile Pinchart (1842-1920). The painting - depicts a girl teasing a bust of the god Pan with a reed - is signed by the artist and presented in a superb quality, bespoke gold metal leaf frame.
In Greek mythology, when the lustful Pan attempted to seduce a nymph by the name of Syrinx, she ran to a river's edge and asked for assistance from the water nymphs, the Naiads. As Pan reached out to grab Syrinx the Naiads transformed her into a cluster of water reeds. When Pan let out a frustrated sigh, his breath blew across the hollow reeds producing a haunting tune. These reeds became the Pipes of Pan.

Auguste-Émile Pinchart studied in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme, and achieved considerable financial success after signing a contract with the pre-eminent French art dealer Jean-Baptiste Goupil. Pinchart exhibited at the Salon in Paris between 1864 and 1893, receiving an honourable mention in 1883 and medal the following year. In 1905 he became a member of the Société des Artistes Français.
