Carlo Francesco Nuvolone
17 Century Holy Family Francesco Nuvolone Holy Family Oil on Canvas White

About the Item

Painting oil on canvas measuring 102 x 120 cm without frame and 110 x 128 cm depicting a Holy Family by the painter Carlo Francesco Nuvolone (Milan 1609 - 1702). A member of the dynasty of painters whose progenitor Panfilo (Cremona, 1581-1651) and his brother Francesco (Milan, 1609-1662), Carlo Francesco expresses a harmony of colors and greater narrative complexity. The painting in question describes a Holy Family in the workshop of San Giuseppe with the artist's evident style characters, here influenced by figurative examples from Emilia and Genoa. The soft drafting, played on delicate shades and chromatic tones, is also characterized by an appreciable luministic sweetness, which offers a peculiar scenic harmony of classic taste, applied here with the visionary and meditative inclinations of the contemporary Milanese cultural climate around the middle of the century. A very personal artist, dominated by the feeling of the sense of color, its perception and its visibility; his is a concrete painting with strong and decisive tones that reveals in all its majesty the great personality that the painter manages to convey in his works. Analyzing some details of the work such as the epidermal beauty of the pictorial material on the wrinkled forehead and the refined definition of the complexion and the superbly painted hands in comparison with the humble clothing we can even direct the work around the 50s of the seventeenth century, when Nuvolone embarks on the path of a more observant typical realism, despite the fact that new chromatic changes far from his youthful period can already be glimpsed when the naturalistic rigor yields to the lure of a more tender and refined pictorial palette as revealed by the more accurate conduct of the various glazes of this painting. We can see the value of our painting through its technical and executive characteristics; it is evident that we are faced with an interesting composition pervaded by a renewed formal essence that is in tune with the pictorial experiments in use in those times. The composition is very balanced and carefully regulated in the colors, of quality especially in the form while the scene, represented here, intelligently developed with never excessive colors. The paintings and works of art published here are my exclusive property and therefore are always available to be viewed, by appointment, in my exhibition sites located in Sanremo and Brescia.
