About the Item

Paper paint graphite charcoal on panel referencing Creation of Adam by Michelangelo in Sistine Chapel Whether the subject matter is figuration or nature, Audrey Anastasi approaches all her subjects directly and unabashedly. In this work on paper, she combines her masterful drawing skills with playful whimsey and somber introspection on the subject of passing time. “Considering myself primarily a feminist artist, painting other women, most of my work focuses on the human face, figures, animals and nature. I prefer direct observation, and I work very rapidly. And, as with all my paintings since 1990, in my quest to discover and reveal what is most essential, these works are painted almost exclusively with my non-dominant left hand.” Audrey Anastasi is a feminist artist. Her practice is rooted in painting other women, the human face, and figure through direct observation. Through this technique, Anastasi examines perception and the construction of self-image. Audrey was born in Baltimore, Maryland. She earned a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Pratt Institute, and taught figure drawing, portfolio development, and anatomy for artists at Parsons School of Design for approximately 10 years. Audrey has been featured in Smart Money Magazine, the Lenny Lopate Show (aka: New York and Company) on National Public Radio, the New York Times, New York Daily News, amNY, Pratt Folio, Jewish Week, the arts & entertainment supplements of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, the Brooklyn Fine Arts magazine, On the Issues Magazine and the New York Observer. Audrey lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
