Not A Space For One

About the Item

"Not A Space For One" by Chinedu Chidebe: A Thought-Provoking Exploration of Connection and Isolation Chinedu Chidebe's artwork "Not A Space For One" is a striking and thought-provoking exploration of the relationship between human beings. The artwork features two human figures, rendered in bold, confident strokes of acrylic and oil on canvas. The figures are in a pose, suggesting no sense of intimacy and connection. However, there is also a sense of tension and discomfort, as if the figures are struggling to find their place in relation to each other. The surrounding space is largely empty, with only a few spare lines suggesting a sense of depth and distance. This creates a sense of isolation and separation as if the two figures are alone in a vast, empty space. The title of the artwork, "Not A Space For One," reinforces this sense of isolation and emphasizes the importance of human connection and interaction. Chidebe's artwork is a powerful statement on the human need for connection and intimacy. The figures suggest a deep desire for closeness and affection, but the surrounding emptiness suggests the difficulty of achieving this connection. The tension and discomfort in the figures' pose suggest the potential for conflict and misunderstanding in human relationships. At the same time, the strength and vulnerability of the figures suggest the potential for growth and understanding through connection. Ultimately, "Not A Space For One" is a poignant and thought-provoking artwork that invites the viewer to consider the complexities of human relationships. Chidebe's bold and confident strokes of acrylic and oil create a dynamic and engaging composition that draws the viewer in and encourages them to examine the artwork from multiple angles. The artwork is a powerful reminder of the importance of connection and intimacy in our lives, and the challenges that can arise when we strive to achieve these essential human needs. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (Issued by the Gallery) About Artist Chinedu Chidebe (1998) is a visual artist born and raised in Anambra, Nigeria. He studied fine and applied art at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (painting major) and has acquired other formal training which has contributed to developing his skill. He works with a variety of mediums and has continually drawn inspiration from his personal experiences. His works can be seen as an allegory where he takes inspiration from the idea of a virtual reality headset and uses it as a metaphor to explore the concept of living in one’s head and getting lost in that space which makes it difficult to accept what’s real; which is one of the problems we face in the modern world and is partly the reason why young people resort to drug use which is barely talked about. Artist Statement Using acrylic, oil, graphite, and charcoal, I depict young Nigerians like myself whose minds are psychologically elsewhere, though they are physically present. This is why I choose to paint over the eyes of my subjects, as I draw inspiration from the worlds that are manifested in a virtual reality headset. The protective refuge that the mind creates, however comforting and seductive, is not a viable way to live. I have begun to discern what can be changed from what cannot be changed, to adapt, and to emerge into the light in order to live more fully.

"Out of Sight" by Chinedu Chidebe: An Artistic Exploration of the Human Condition Chinedu Chidebe's artwork "Out of Sight" is a powerful expression of the human condition. The artwork is a mixed media piece that incorporates acrylic paint and oil on canvas. At first glance, the artwork appears to be a chaotic mess of lines and colors. However, upon closer inspection, the piece reveals a deep and thoughtful exploration of the hidden aspects of the human experience. The painting is dominated by a large central figure, which appears to be a representation of the human form. The figure is twisted with its long neck and round ears of lines and colors. The figure's face contorted in agony. Chidebe's artwork is a poignant exploration of the hidden aspects of the human experience. The twisted and contorted central figure suggests the pain and suffering that many people experience in their lives. The surrounding calm suggests the confusion and disorientation that can often accompany difficult experiences. The patch of blue...

"Idiot Wind, Sweet Reason" is an acrylic painting on canvas measuring 24" high by 36" wide. Again cutting to the quick, Dale Williams posits our best and worst instincts as a duality, and that duality as a confrontation. There's nowhere to hide in any of William's paintings, that's part of the charge coming off his canvases. That's particularly true with this painting – as hideous as these personnages may be in Idiot Wind and Sweet Reason, we recognize their struggle for grace. Press Release 2018: "Williams acknowledges a large range of influences on his vision: the moral lessons embodied in the works of 17th century engraver Jacques Lagniet, the darkling phantasms and tragic reportage of Goya’s Caprichos and Disasters of War, and the personal mythologizing of the late paintings of Philip Guston. Such works echo throughout Williams social surrealist re-visioning." – George Del Barrio, Vanderbilt Republic, Brooklyn NY Dale Williams has exhibited in the New York City area for the past 25 years. He is a 2014 recipient of a Fellowship in Printmaking/Drawing/Book Arts from the New York Foundation for the Arts. His most recent one-person show, “America Now Suite,” which re-visioned American history in service of the civic imagination, was held at Gowanus Loft, Brooklyn in October 2018. A selection of portraits from “America Now Suite” was included in the BRIC Biennial, Winter/Spring 2019. His portrait of Osip Mandelstam...
