Chizuru Morii KAPLAN (b. 1954, Japan) La Dance II Original watercolor on Arches Hand signed 52 x 52 inches Framed Architectural renderer for such legendary, influential architects as I.M. Pei, Japanese born CHIZURU MORII KAPLAN is a painter who now resides in New York City. For two and a half decades, after studying architectural and interior design in Tokyo, Chizuru worked as a freelance architectural renderer in Tokyo, Chicago, and New York for renowned architects including I.M. PEI, whose iconic structures dazzled the world, among them the pyramid of Le Louvre in Paris, the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar, the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio and the East Building, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., to name just a few. In 2007, Chizuru Morii Kaplan studied watercolor with Paul Ching-Bor at the Art Student League of New York, and she subsequently won a fellowship from the League for study at the Paris American Academy. Chizuru has won numerous awards and her paintings have been exhibited in New YorkCity at the National Arts Club Gallery, the Salmagundi Club, the Bertrand Delacroix Gallery as well as the Springfield Art Museum in Springfield, Missouri. In 2021, Chizuru’s work, The Fountain of Rome II, was featured on the Opera de Paris’ program for Puccini’s TOSCA at the Opera Bastille, Paris. Founded in 1669 by King Louis XIV, the Opera de Paris is the primary opera and ballet company of France. One of the world’s greatest ballet and opera houses, it possesses two theatres, the Palais Garnier (1875) and the Opéra Bastille (1989). With over 350 performances per year, its mission is to preserve and develop France’s operatic and ballet heritage. Great composers such as Rameau, Gluck, Rossini, Verdi, Wagner, Gounod, Massenet, Poulenc and Messiaen all gave the first performances of their works here. The ballet company, rich in historical tradition, performs all around the world. Over the years it has played host to the greatest choreographers: George Balanchine, Serge Lifar, Rudolf Nureyev, Roland Petit, Maurice Béjart, and Pina Bausch. Her work has been repeatedly featured in SPLASH, the Best of Watercolor, and in The Artist’s Magazine. In the October 2014 issue of Watercolor Artist Magazine, the critic Sarah A. Stricken wrote, “painting from dark to light with a nary of hard edge in sight, Chizuru Morii Kaplan breaks with tradition to bring out the best qualities of watercolor in her surprisingly detailed architectural paintings.” “My work is watercolor on paper -- yet rather than pursue the traditional way of using this delicate, fragile media, I am exploring and pushing the broader possibilities to break expectations of what watercolor can reveal and to create strong statements. Many of my pieces focus on classic, European architecture. I am captivated by not only the beauty, but by all the human conditions that echo in these buildings. Perhaps because of my experience as an architectural renderer, I know firsthand how even the smallest details reflect the skill, knowledge, emotions and physical energies of the people who gave their lives to bring these creations into being. My artistic challenge is to push myself to go deeper than a mere physical representation. I seek to reveal the human struggle and potential that contribute to the unique stories within each structure.“ -Chizuru Morii Kaplan.
