About the Item

Many cultures imbue ravens with meaning. In Thought and Memory , I reference the Norse god Odin, who daily sent his two ravens into the world to gather news, yet daily feared they would not return. In my painting, two ravens hover near the head of the blond child. Are they returning with news of the world outside, leaving on their mission, or about to attack the child? The space the child occupies seems idyllic and innocent, yet her expression belies this impression, as she seems gravely preoccupied. I love to create this kind of tension in a work, in which first impressions are soon found to be more complex and darker. I like to create paintings that open a space for the viewer to project their own narrative, rather than nailing everything down. This painting is the 5th in my ongoing exploration of the complexities of childhood experiences.
