Wolf Boy

2007

About the Item

Acrylic on panel, 56cm x 61cm, (67cm x 77cm framed) Born in Newport, south Wales, in 1951, the early part of his career was as a choreographer and stage director. Turning away from theatre in the 90s, to concentrate on painting, he has been praised by critics in The Independent, Modern Painters and Art Review. Simon Callow has called him ‘one of the most individual and complete artists of our time'. Galleries has described his work as ‘reflective, expressive painting of the highest order.’ His work is included in numerous private and public collections, including the National Museum of Wales and the Pallant House Gallery This painting is part of a series, in which the artist was inspired by the legend of St Hervé; a blind “boy-saint”, revered in Breton popular mythology, whose dog, his loyal guide, was devoured by a wolf. Paradoxically, the marauding wolf thereafter became Hervé’s new pair of eyes.
