About the Item

We are obsessed with the brilliance of Donald Beal's paintings, and we think you will be, too. The color and sense of light that unites all of his paintings project an unforgettable aura. "Donald Beal's work breaks new ground in a gentle but inviting manner; his use of color and light are only devices designed to accent his unique sense of observation. What sets Beal's expression apart from those of his predecessors, however, is the lens from which he gazes. His perspective of nature is, in a sobering yet enlightening style, reflective of himself." Donald Beal received an MFA from Parsons School of Design in 1983. In 1985 he moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he married photographer Khristine Hopkins.  He has been a Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts in North Dartmouth from 1999 to 2015, and he continues to work and paint on Cape Cod and greater New England.

Here, he abstracted the city skyline of Hudson, NY. Buildings and rooftops in shades of magenta, teal, and green are segmented in the foreground and cropped with black power lines. A soft yellow sky is layered with thin strokes of gesturally applied pale blue paint, furthering abstracting the city landscape. The piece is in excellent condition and ready to hang as is. The sides are painted a very dark, warm magenta so framing is not necessary. About the Artist: Growing up in Puerto Rico, I observed how people and nature could co-exist in harmony. • Illustrated Man
    By Paton Miller
    Located in Sag Harbor, NY
A mixed media painting showing a seated man with tattoos. In “Illustrated Man” we see a single figure, covered in tattoos; portraits, designs, and patterns coat the man's skin from torso to fingertips. His face remains pure, unscathed from any ink marks; clear-headed and gazing forward. Behind him, Miller presents an obscure tapestry of civilization, an empire of sandy structures under a lapis lazuli night sky. Winding roads lead to city walls, while shadows and foundation-lines melt into creatures; a toothy alligator appears out of a stone façade...
