Edith Desternes, The Church Notre-Dame de l'Assomption in Auvers-sur-Oise, 1920s

1920s

About the Item

Oil on canvas by Edith Desternes (1901-2000), France, 1920s. The Church Notre-Dame de l'Assomption in Auvers-sur-Oise. This church has been painted in 1890 by Vincent van Gogh. At first glance, one is struck by the strength of this work. Then, on examination, one is captivated by this depth of soul and technique. Edith Desternes uses a thick paint here where black, and dark colors, play a privileged role. Thus the contrast between the warm and cold tones, surrounded by black, create an intense luminosity reminiscent of stained glass windows from the Middle Ages. Georges Rouault is present in this powerful work. With frame : 87x66 cm - 34.25x26 inches ; without frame : 81x60 cm - 31.9x23.6 inches ; 25P Format. Signed "E. Desternes" lower right (see photo). On the back, we notice the pictorial material dropped by the artist, it is not a restoration. The condition is excellent ! Céline Édith Desternes was born in Paris on February 21, 1901. She was the daughter of Louis Desternes (1864-1936), professor at the Lycée Charlemagne and sister of Suzanne Desternes (3 Prix de l'Académie Française). Pupil and muse of the painter Gaston Simoes of Fonseca (himself a pupil of Jean Léon Gérôme), she abandoned her activity of creating contemporary bindings for painting in the 1920s. Painter of Montparnasse, she frequented the high places of French painting of the time. She exhibited her works with Fonseca before the war at the Barreiro gallery, rue de Seine and participated in the Salon des Indépendants. She is also a member of the Salon d'automne, the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon du dessin et de peinture à l'eau. In the 1950s, she decided to devote herself to painting on glass which she presented on several occasions at the Galerie Bruno Bassano (1956). Ten years later, the Japanese painter Toshio Bando (1895-1973) encouraged her to work in gouache. Her gouaches will be noticed and appreciated by art critic Raymond Charmet. She guides and encourages Jean Guitton to paint. The latter will recognize his influence on several occasions, and they will often exhibit together in Paris (at the Katia Granoff gallery) and in the provinces (Montluçon in Bourbonnais). In the 1990s, she rediscovered a taste for painting on glass and won the grand prize for gemmail in Lourdes. Her works are exhibited at the Salon d'Automne. The themes of her exhibitions will be: Fonseca and Desternes, the Loire and the Bourbonnais, where his family ties are very deeply rooted, Spain (Medici gallery 1976), Corsica, Women and Flowers, Anaïs Nin, the Poems by Katia Granoff (1984). Desternes painted portraits of Marcel Proust, Virginia Woolf, Anaïs Nin, actress Moune de Rivel and Silvia Monfort, all exhibited at the Salon d'automne. She died in La Charité-sur-Loire on November 3, 2000. She was buried in the cemetery of Moulins. Oil on canvas by Henri-André Martin (1918-2004), France, ca.1980s. Les Baux de Provence. With frame: 71x98 cm - 28x38.6 inches. Without frame: 65x92cm - 25.6x36.2 inches. 30P format. Signed lower right "Henri A Martin" (see photo). Located and dated 1961 on the back (see photo). Can be matched to make a pair with another painting by Henri-André Martin that we offer on 1stdibs whose title is "Henri-André Martin Olive Tree Field in the Alpilles, Provence, Oil on Canvas". Born in Lyon in 1918, the child and the adolescent Henri-André Martin spent his youth in Saint-Étienne, his father, Edme Martin, first installed as a practicing doctor in Lyon, having been appointed doctor of the anti-tuberculosis dispensaries of the Loire. During his first years of studying medicine in Lyon, he nevertheless enrolled in the Beaux-Arts. Appointed hospital intern upon his return from captivity in 1942, he ended his medical career as director of the otolaryngology university clinic at Édouard-Herriot hospital. But painting was his passion. Painting was for Henri-André Martin the way of expressing his feelings. By nature very reserved and of an extreme modesty that many took for coldness, it was what allowed him to express his strong artistic sensitivity and, his pictorial periods are as many reflects of his anxieties, of his hopes, of his joys. At every period of his life, wherever he goes and whenever he has a moment, he paints gouaches, often of small size, but sometimes of larger size. He also paints beaches that have been compared to those of Boudin. Their invoice shows, however, that this figure is only appearance and that in fact, these beaches made of water, sky and sand, readily dispense with the motif, the work of the material seeming to have more importance. as the subject. Despite the fact that until the 1970s he painted "on the ground", his canvases remain far removed from the anecdote. Often harsh like the landscapes of Provence, the Parisian walls which express concern, or the railways, the switch tracks which suggest, in ocher and black, all the embarrassment of choice. We find the same nostalgic gravity in the canvases of the carcasses of boats which, as his friend Louis Pons later wrote, "seem to die of immobility" or in the canvases of Venice, or the landscapes of Eygalières. In the following years, his painting became simpler, more synthetic, such as these landscapes with tortured almond trees, black and gnarled olive trees, plane trees standing out against the ocher sky of the dawn of Provence, in winter. These are also the canvases of Hamburg in the dough becomes heavier, the colors darken, marking all the gravity of the port landscapes. Workshop work gradually takes precedence over motif painting. The pivotal period coincides with that of his work on the olive tree, during which he leads the realization of the "Trunks", a collection of six lithographic plates, of the book L'olivier comprising many lithographs and serigraphs, but also texts. poetic and numerous paintings. He then became passionate about everything related to the olive tree (literature, painting, traditions, history), but also to the tree itself, its thousand-year-old history, its poetry, its symbols, but also its culture, its size. oil production...

The light I observed everywhere was of a special quality, fluorescent blue, shone from nowhere but radiated from every point, oddly with great depth and intensity. The light in an entirely different dimension came from nowhere and went nowhere shimmering with the glow of a bright blue jewel. The most important thing I discovered was of being omnipresent and able to understand everything at the same time, yes I could fathom creation completely. Auke Sonnega, born March 9, 1910 in Leeuwarden, known as the painter, primarily of young Balinese men and women. Originally raised in the reformed denomination, the parents of Auke apparently practised theosophy and their children, including Auke were taught these principles. The talent for drawing revealed itself at an early stage which in 1926 lead to a 4-year study of textile design at the Academy for Art and Craft in Amsterdam. He completed the academy in 1930 and worked in a carpet factory in Twente until 1934 and then followed in his sister Aafje’s footsteps leaving the Netherlands to go to the Dutch East Indies where in 1935 he started working as a graphic designer with an advertising bureau in Batavia. He was able to travel through Java and Bali on the motorbike that he brought with him from Europe, and was paid for his travelogue, enhanced with his own photo’s which appeared in several Dutch newspapers and magazines. • Winter landscape. 1984, canvas, oil, 60x80 cm

Winter landscape. 1984, canvas, oil, 60x80 cm Slepyshev Anatoly Stepanovich (1932 - 2016) - Soviet and Russian painter, sculptor, graphic artist. Anatoly Slepyshev was a distinguished Russian artist and a recognised master who had a great talent and a distinctly recognisable style that cannot be confused with anyone. The most characteristic feature of his paintings is a swirl, maelstrom of colourful formations, vigorously, rapidly, almost frantically put on canvas in a burst of sudden emotion, of spontaneous sensuality. The artist brilliantly managed to blend the subjects of the Russian hinterland, simple village life with horse-driven carriages, small humble churches and familiar landscapes with refined, pompous images of French Rococo, the atmosphere inherent in the works of Jean-Antoine Watteau. This liberal, highly personal interpretation of the sophisticated French motifs of the XVIII century, processed by means of dashing Russian folklore, sometimes even containing vulgar, staggering elements, is very typical for many works by Slepyshev.
