About the Item
Stabat Mater
207 x 250 x 120 cm
oil on canvas
Canvasses (3) are framed in a scaffolding in which the side panels can rotate and close.
It is possible to have the paintings framed in a black box frame that can be hung on the wall.
It has been an altar piece In the run-up to the Easter celebration and during Easter in the Martini Church in Groningen. It also has been published in the Dutch Newspaper. ( Nederlands Dagblad).
In this newest painting, former winner of the BP Portrait Award, artist Egbert Modderman paints the hymn 'Stabat Mater'.
The Stabat Mater is a 13th-century Christian hymn to Mary that portrays her suffering as Jesus Christ's mother during his crucifixion.
In his works Egbert Modderman always tells you a story, in Christian tradition or in the tradition of mythology.
Since 2017, Egbert Modderman has been working on a major follow-up assignment for the Martini Church: painting the seven works of mercy. The works will be placed in the choir of the church. It is the first time since the Reformation and the iconoclasm - when the church became Protestants - that permanent visual art is again present in the church.
As a result of the first exhibition in the Martini Church, the work Egbert Modderman is on permanent display in the United States. In a museum specially set up around his work called "Modderman Biblical Art." A large part of the work is currently on loan to the "Museum of the Bible" in Washington. We are very happy that we are going to work exclusively with this special artist.
After our first introduction 5 years ago, the artist's drive continues to be large and fits perfectly into our ambitious collection. Modderman lives and works in Groningen. He considers himself more a craftsman than an artist. We exclusive represent this fine young artist.
Shipping, crating and insurance is possible in two ways. With the scaffolding of steel costs are high, it has to be crated in a secure way. It will be big and heavy. depending on where you live we can show the costs. The other possibility, we change it to a triptych that can be walled, three canvassen in a small black frame. They can hang on a wall separate side by side 5 cm from each other. In that case shipping is free and worldwide possible in a custom made wooden crate.
Feel free to ask anything about this artist, this work, etc. .
EGBERT MODDERMAN WINS BP PORTRAIT AWARD FOR YOUNGSTERS 2020 London (GBR)May 5, 2020 Great International Art Prize after Egbert Modderman. Groningen artist Egbert Modderman (1989) has become the winner of the “BP Young Artist Award 2020”. The prize, instituted by "The National Portrait Gallery in London", goes to Modderman for the painting "Restless". The Dutch artist emerged from a selection of nearly 2000 paintings from all over the world. It is the first time in 30 years that this honorable and internationally highly regarded young artist award has been awarded to a Dutch artist. Dr Nicholas Cullinan, Director, National Portrait Gallery London says: 'I am pleased we have been able to find a way to share the BP Portrait Award 2020 exhibition with our visitors at home, during this uncertain time and hope that staging a virtual exhibition will provide us with the opportunity to bring the very best in contemporary portrait painting to an even wider audience. The BP Portrait Award is tasked with finding and recognizing portrait paintings that combine technical accomplishment and a demonstration of insight and empathy for the subject and sitter. It is a tough challenge, but, this year, one that has been responded to with great prowess and I would like to congratulate all the shortlist artists and those selected for exhibition.

- Judith- 21st Century Contemporary Dutch Painting of Female StrengthBy Yvonne HeemskerkLocated in Nuenen, Noord BrabantYvonne Heemskerk Judith Oil and bitumen on canvas 120 x 180 cm This painting shows the most important things in the works of Dutch painter Yvonne Heemskerk, female strength and the love for the material. Painted with oils and bitumen to give the layers a kind of roughness that she wants to have for showing what fire does. The artist herself explains about this work: Sharing my process and deeper feelings about my painting Judith. My first painting shown with my new found medium… tar(bitumen)!! The roughness of the material is the starter of it all. Underneath all these colors there is this wild, rough untamed sticky basic, that tries to get a grip...Category

- "White Gold Lilies for the Dove of Peace" Contemporary Figurative Oil PaintingBy Sax BerlinLocated in Brecon, PowysA masterwork from a master artist,White Gold Lilies for the Dove of Peace is an immaculate piece, pure colours balanced with earthy hues imbue the work with shades of sumptuous richness seldom found outside the great collections. Nuance and symbolism combine within the elements of this painting to create an artistic journey through antiquity; Japanese wood block design, the language of flowers, even the colours themselves combine so masterfully to complete the piece. In this large ground breaking painting Berlin has used bright vermillion & turquoise powered tones, volcanic glass and rock garnered from the slopes of Mount Vesuvius create texture and the use of the finest hand ground pigments and pure white gold leaf escalate this seminal piece to a higher plane. - Barbara Gittings (Figuartive Painting of LGBTQ Icon in Gold Triptych Frame)By Carl GrauerLocated in Hudson, NYPortrait painting of LGBTQ icon, Barbara Gittings Entitled: "Barbara Gittings (Mother)" Painted by Carl Grauer in 2019 Oil and gold leaf on board 20 x 32 inches, 20 x 16 inches when closed Can rest on a surface or can be hung with two d-rings that are installed on the back This painting was made by Poughkeepsie, NY based artist, Carl Grauer, in 2019. It is part of the artist's latest series, The Lavender Temple of Their Most Fabulous, painted in tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion. Here the artist depicts LGBTQ activist, Barbara Gittings, on a gold leaf triptych frame resembling a Catholic altarpiece. Gittings is further sanctified with a glowing gold leaf halo while holding a copy of "The Ladder". Scenes of homosexual rights protests are featured on the left and right side of the folding triptych. When closed, the painting measures 20 x 16 inches and depicts two female symbols on the front. The piece can be shown unfolded either resting on a surface or by hanging it with the two d-rings that are installed on the back. About Barbara Gittings: Barbara Gittings was a LGBTQ+ activist whose contributions had a significant impact on LGBTQ+ acceptance and rights in the United States. Born in Vienna, Austria in 1932 while her father served as a U.S. diplomat, she was the organizer of the New York chapter of the Daughter of Bilitis (DOB), the first US national lesbian organization and served as editor of the DOB magazine, The Ladder, from 1963-1966. In the 1960s, Gittings co-organized picket lines to raise awareness about the ban on employment of gay people by the U.S. government, the country’s largest employer at the time. She also was part of the movement to persuade the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which they stopped listing as a mental disorder in 1973. Her childhood experiences of finding very little literature or information about being gay inspired her to have a lifelong involvement with libraries, especially the American Library Association (ALA), to promote positive LGBTQ+ literature in libraries. She passed away in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania in 2007 and has awards from the ALA and Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) named after her. “Equal treatment — no more, no less — is what we want! And compassion— which many homosexuals gladly swallow because they think it represents an improvement in attitudes toward them — is not equal treatment.” – Barbara Gittings More about the series: In tribute to the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion, Poughkeepsie based artist Carl Grauer debuts The Lavender Temple of Their Most Fabulous, a new series depicting notable figures of the LGBTQ+ movement. Portraits of gay rights advocates, such as Harvey Milk...Category
