About the Item

Egon Hofmann war nicht nur als Maler wichtig und wegweisend, sondern auch als Netzwerker, der als Gründer und langjähriger Präsident der Künstlervereinigung „März“ eine wichtige Rolle spielte. Auch die Ankäufe von Fritz Aigner von Oberösterreichs Museen sind auf ein Drängen Egon Hofmanns getätigt worden. Der Bezug zur Galerie ist äußerst eng, denn die Galerie kaufte den gesamten Nachlass sowie auch die Privatsammlung von Egon Hofmann, die eine eigene Ausstellung ergab. Obwohl Egon Hofmann unzweifelhaft ein Begründer der Klassischen Moderne in Oberösterreich ist und er einen unverwechselbaren, reduzierten, monumentalen und farblich expressiven Stil geprägt hat, hat er am Kunstmarkt sein Potenzial bei weitem nicht ausgeschöpft. 2020 gab es ein große Personale in Nordico Stadtmuseum in Linz, bei der auch einige interessante Videos erstellt wurden. Egon Hofmanns Bildsprache greift die neuesten Strömungen der Kunst des beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts, von Paul Cézanne, den Künstlern der „Brücke“ oder den Schweizer Malern im Umfeld von Ferdinand Hodler auf. Er entwickelte seinen unverkennbaren künstlerischen Ausdruck, durch das Wechselspiel einer strengen, kühlen Komposition und einer warmen, empfindsamen Farbakzentuierung. Neben der Bergmalereien entstanden zahlreiche Stillleben, Stadtansichten und Werke, in denen er Eindrücke von seinen Reisen festhielt. Lalibela ist Beispiel einer der Reiseimpressionen aus der Nachkriegszeit, die Egon Hofmann in expressiver Farbigkeit und strengem kompositorischen Aufbau festhält. Die Felsenkirchen von Lalibella wurden aus dem 13. Jahrhundert aus den Felsen herausgeschnitten und sind so einzigartige architektonische Meisterwerke, die zum Weltkulturerbe gehören. Dargestellt ist wohl die wichtigste Kirche Bet Giyorgis und zwar von oben betrachtet. Das große Kreuz entspricht dem Dach dieses imposanten Baus, im Hintergrund reduziert der Künstler die Baumlandschaft zu drei einzelnen klar akzentuierten Bäumen, die ein kompositorisches Gegengewicht darstellen. Ein rauer Farbauftrag mit durchschimmernden Farben schafft eine weitere exotische Ebene und gibt insgesamt eine Darstellung von meditativer Kraft.
