Artist Statement – Original Gouache Paintings
“In 2022 after much thought, I expanded my artistic practice to include painting. I wanted to find a more fluid way of making art. While my linocut prints must be heavily planned out before the image is assembled, the act of painting is immediate and spontaneous. It’s a process of discovery. These gouache paintings retain the intimacy and sense of calm that I explore in my linocut prints, but in painting I’ve been able to play with more detail, light, and shadow. Rather than work on canvas or board, I’ve made a very conscious decision to continue to create works on paper. Paintings on paper have a softness that feels like a very natural extension of my art.
All of my work explores the beauty in moments of quiet reflection both within interior spaces and natural landscapes. My figures and settings have a flatness and minimalism to them that helps to cultivate the sense of peace I’m seeking both in my work and in my life.”

Ellen Von Wiegand
Ellen has a background in Art History. She completed her Masters degree in Contemporary Art at Christie's Education in 2011, and received her BA in Art History from John Cabot University, Rome in 2010. She began to develop an interest in printmaking while studying the linocuts of Picasso and Der Blaue Reiter during her time at Christie's, and she is largely self-taught in the craft.
