About the Item

Flora MacDonald Reid (1861-1938) A MOTHER’S LESSON Oil on canvas Signed and dated 1916 Frame H. 64cm x W. 79cm Image H. 46cm x W. 60cm A scene showing a seated woman, holding a book, instructing two young boys who hold slates in their hands. Macdonald Reid was a prolific painter of rural subjects and genre scenes who regularly contributed to major exhibitions in Britain and on the Continent. Like many of her contemporaries including George Clausen and James Guthrie, her early style was strongly influenced by the work of Jules Bastien-Lepage. Though born in London, the family returned to Edinburgh where she enrolled in classes at the Trustee’s Academy. She began exhibiting at the Royal Scottish Academy at the age of sixteen. In 1881, she moved back to London with her siblings, John Robertson Reid and Lizzie Reid. She never married, allowing her to devote her life to her art. Family scene. Oil sketch on cardboard. This work will be recorded in the catalogue raisonné of the work of the artist currently in preparation. Jules Van Biesbroeck was the son of Jules Evariste van Biesbroeck, a painter of Ghent, but was born in Italy, in Portici, near Naples, while his parents were staying there. His first painting, "The Shepherd" (French: Le pâtre), was sold at the Triennale in Ghent. In 1888, when he was only 15 years old, he made his debut at the "Salon des Champs-Elysées" in Paris with his monumental work "The Launch of the Argo" (French: Le lancement...
