About the Item
'The French Wig (blue)' 2016 by American artist, Gary Komarin. Mixed media on canvas, 14 x 11 in. Wigs are among Komarin’s most recognizable idiosyncratic images. This faux naive work on paper features a faceless character donning a wig. As stated by the artist, the idea of the wig is to cover up, accentuate, and/or adorn and these qualities relate closely to his process of making a painting. In vivid colors of blue, orange, black, and white.
Komarin has been painting and exhibiting for over thirty years and his works are in numerous corporate, museum, and private collections around the globe. Born 1951 in Manhattan, the artist studied at the New School NYC, and Boston University where his mentor was Philip Guston. His paintings display a vitality and tension between the spontaneous and the considered, the accidental and the consciously executed. It is the natural result of his process based on his belief that intention and control should be totally removed from the act of painting.
Gary Komarin has been honored with the Joan Mitchell Prize in Painting, the New York Foundation for the Arts Grant in Painting, the Edward Albee Foundation Fellowship in Painting, the Elizabeth Foundation, New York Prize in Painting and the Benjamin Altman Prize from the National Academy of Design Museum, New York. Articles and reviews of Komarin's work have appeared in Architectural Digest, the New York Times, Arts Magazine, and Art in America, among others.
