"The Ladies Club" is an acrylic on canvas painting by Genieve Figgis, painted in 2021. The artwork size is 31 1/2 x 39 3/8 inches. The piece is signed verso, "Genieve Figgis 2021".
Contemporary Irish painter Genieve Figgis re-imagines the art historical canon through a Surreal - and often quite humorous - lens. Her best known paintings depict gatherings of well-heeled female subjects, offering an intimate view into another world.
In "The Ladies Club", Figgis paints a group of ghoulish subjects in a lavish French Rococo interior. It is a highly typical painting for Figgis.
"The Ladies Club" is rife with historical references, containing at least two paintings-within-a-painting. At left in the background is a framed nude similar to Manet's "Olympia" or Delacroix's "Eugène". At right is a likely a reference to Jacques Louis David's famed painting, "Napoleon Crossing the Alps".
Figgis' visual lexicon and the social commentary it imbues resembles the work of English painter James Ensor.
