Italy retains an enduring appeal for artists. Boudin, Whistler, Sickert, Renoir, and Monet all have come to Italy at different times to nurture the soul. Our resident artist Ilya Zorkin is no exception. Painted on location upon the artist's first visit to Rome in 2017, this study captures the mysterious and elegant interior of Capella Contarelli, located within the church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome. This chapel is famous for housing three paintings on the theme of Saint Matthew the Evangelist by the Baroque master Caravaggio. Ilya Zorkin is an artist worthy of the old masters whose secrets he studied relentlessly. Born and raised in Saint-Petersburg, Russia, in 2019 Ilya graduated with distinction from the prestigious St.Petersburg Art Academy where he teaches and holds a workshop at the moment. Ilya is one of the rare graduates who has been awarded a gold medal by the Russian Academy of Arts: this way of celebrating the merits of the outstanding artists continues the pre-revolutionary traditions of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Aivazovsky, Bryullov, Repin and other prominent Russian painters who defined the classical school of painting of the 19th century have all received this award in the past. Large scale historical paintings, thorough development of the theme, ethnographic accuracy, multi-figure compositions and virtuoso execution is what Ilya Zorkin excels at. His works exhibit solid draftsmanship and are imbued in tradition while remaining relevant for today, gaining him a large following around the world.
